Nativism and the Anti-immigration Movement (from 1880s to 1920s)

Anotace:

Tato bakalářská práce sleduje rozmach hnutí nativismu ve Spojených Státech především v období od 80. let 19. století do 20. let 20. století, a to, jakými způsoby tyto hnutí ovlivňovaly nejen veřejné mínění o imigrantech, ale také přijetí nových zákonů, které vedly ke stálé přísnější restrikci imigrace. Mimo to, se snaží vysvělit rozporuplný pohled Američanů na přistěhovalectví, které je občas vnímáno jako něco, co je pro společnost přínosné, a někdy naopak jako ekonomická i společenská hrozba. Proto se práce z úvodu zabývá tématem nativismu, jeho proměn a příčin a chce ukázat, že i přesto, že Americká společnost sestává z mnoha etnických a náboženských skupin, často se obrací proti nových přístěhovalcům, protože jsou údajně jiní než většinová společnost. Tato tendence vyvrcholila na přelomu 19. a 20 století, kdy imigrace ze zemí střední, východní a jižní Evropy poprvé začala převažovat nad imigrací ze zemí severní a zapadní Evropy. V této době se Spojené Státy také potýkali se změnami jež přinesla průmyslová revoluce, a také s nepříznivou ekonomickou situací, a tak se poprvé v historii začaly některé skupiny vyjadřovat proti neomezené imigraci z Evropy. Později tuto tendenci umocnily pseudovědecké rasistické teorie eugenistů, kteří se snažily dokázat méněcennost „nových“ imigrantů. Vše vyvrcholilo ve 20. letech 20. století, kdy Spojené Státy poprvé razantně omezily imigraci z Evropy, jež po dlouhou dobu byla hlavním zdrojem imigrace, a to na základě kvót, jež zvýhodňovaly imigranty ze severní a západní Evropy.

Abstract:

This thesis follows the rise of nativist movement in the United States especially in the period starting in the 1890s and ending in the 1920s, and the way this movement changed the public perception of immigrants. It also studies the role of the movement in the enactment of new laws, which led to increasingly tougher restriction. Besides that, the thesis tries to explain the ambiguous attitude of the Americans on immigration, which is at times seen as something beneficial, but at other times considered an economic and cultural threat to the society. Therefore, the thesis first deals with the themes of nativism and its causes, while it aims to show that even though the American society consists of many ethnic and religious groups, it often turns against the new immigrants, on the ground of their otherness. This tendency culminated at the turn of the twentieth century, when the immigration from the central, eastern and southern Europe for the first time dominated over the immigration from northern and western Europe. At the same time, the country was going through changes that were brought by the industrial revolution, and also had to deal with an adverse economic situation. As a result, for the first time in American history, some groups began to promote restriction to open immigration from Europe. This tendency was later enhanced by the pseudo scientific racial theories of the eugenists, who aimed to prove the inferiority of the “new” immigrants. In the 1920s, the anti-immigration movement won its case, as in this decade the United States for the first time radically restricted the immigration from Europe, which had for a long time been the main source of immigration to the country, with the system of national origins quotas that discriminated against the “new” immigrants.
