Czech videoart till the year 2000

Abstract:

Cílem mé diplomové práce je zmapovat počátky českého videoumění a jeho vstup do výtvarného prostoru skrze tvorbu nejvýznamnějších českých osobností videoartu, které působily na našem území v 80. a 90. letech. Nejprve se zaměříme na definici pojmu videoart z hlediska vlastností užitého média, v protikladu k filmu a digitálním médiím. V další části si představíme a srovnáme díla nejvýznamnějších českých autorů umění videa. Nejprve se budeme zabývat sdružením Obor video a jeho nejvýraznějšími členy Radkem Pilařem a Petrem Skalou, tedy autory spojenými s oficiální televizní tvorbou. Zaměříme se také na dalšího člena Oboru videa, a to na Ivana Tatíčka. Dále se budeme věnovat performerovi a videoartistovi Tomáši Rullerovi, představiteli české neoficiální umělecké scény. Následně jsou zde představeny práce Čechů tvořících v zahraničí Woodyho Vasulky, Michaela Bielického a Petra Vrány. Vasulka a Bielický v devadesátých letech v ČR působili především v roli pedagogů, Petr Vrána zde založil Media-archiv. Poslední úsek je věnován generaci studentů Ateliéru videoplastiky (později Ateliér nových médií) a Ateliéru video a multimediální animace (později Ateliér Video-Multimedia-Performance). Cílem je vytvořit ucelený obraz české videoartové scény nahlédnutý prizmatem námi předložené definice umění videa. Zdrojem informací byly především katalogy z českých výstav, na kterých bylo prezentováno videoumění, dále odborné články a materiály uložené v Media-archivu FaVU a v soukromém archivu Tomáše Rullera.

Abstract:

The aim of my diploma thesis is to describe the origins of Czech video art and its penetration into the art scene through the works of the most significant Czech personalities of video art, who practised in the genre in our country in the 80´s and 90´s. First of all, we will try to define the term video art from the point of view of the characteristics of the used medium, in contrast to film and digital media. In the next part, the works of the renowned authors of video art will be introduced and compared. We will start with an association called „Obor video“ and its most prominent members Radek Pilař and Peter Skala, artists who are connected with official television production. We will also pay attention to another member of the association „Obor videa“ – Ivan Tatíček. Further, we will deal with a performer and video artist Tomáš Ruller, a representative of Czech unofficial art scene. Subsequently, this part presents the works of art created by Czech artists living abroad - Woody Vasulka, Michael Bielický and Petr Vrána. Vasulka and Bielický lived in the Czech Republic in the 90´s and worked here, especially as teachers, Petr Vrána founded Media-archiv here. The last section deals with a generation of students of „ Ateliér videoplastiky“ (later Studio of New Media) and „Ateliér video a multimediální animace“ (later Atelier Video-Multimedia-Performance). The goal is to provide a detailed description of Czech video art scene as it is viewed through the prism of the definition of video art set forth in this thesis. The sources of information included primarily catalogues from Czech exhibitions showing video art, as well as articles, materials stored in FFA Media-Archive and in the private archive of Tomáš Ruller.
