Metaphors and Idioms in Translations German-Czech. Illustrated on the work of E. Jelinek

Abstract:

This work deals with analysis of metaphoric and idiomatic means specifically in the novel "The Pianist", by the contemporary Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek. It includes a short biography of the novelist, the reference to her most important work, and short interpretation of the novel mentioned above. It's followed by a theoretical part summarizing all problems of phraseology and stylistic means first of all tropes. In the practical part chosen expressions with their Czech translation by Jitka Jílková are found. Idioms and phrases are compared by means of dictionaries of phraseology and idioms. The aim of the work is finding out metaphors in the text, and comments them on from my own point of view.
