Existential crisis of the main characters of Michel Houellebecq's novels

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the theme of the existential crisis and the existential feeling of the main characters in the work of Michel Houellebecq, specifically in his novels Extension du domaine de la lute (trans. as Whatever) and Sérotonine (trans. as Serotonin). The thesis examines the extent to which the author's work reflects the characteristics of French existentialism as a philosophical direction of the second half of the 20th century. The analysis of Michel Houellebecq's novels is based on the ideas of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, who are considered to be the most important representatives of the atheistic branch of French existentialism. The aim of this thesis is to point out the feelings of anxiety, estrangement, loneliness, absurdity of life and certainty of death experienced by Houellebecq's heroes, and subsequently to examine their resemblance to the main characters in the novels Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre and The Stranger by Albert Camus.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na tématiku existenční krize a existenciálního pocitu hlavních postav v díle Michela Houellebecqa, konkrétně v jeho románech Rozšíření bitevního pole a Serotonin. Práce zkoumá, v jaké míře se v autorově díle projevují rysy francouzského existencialismu jakožto filosofického směru 2. poloviny 20. století. Analýza románů Michela Houellebecqa je prováděna na pozadí myšlenek Jeana-Paula Sartra a Alberta Camuse, kteří jsou považování za nejvýznamnější představitele ateistické větve francouzského existencialismu. Cílem práce je poukázat na pocity úzkosti, odcizení, samoty, nesmyslnosti života a jistoty smrti, které zakoušejí Houellebecqovi hrdinové, a následně prozkoumat jejich podobnost s hlavními postavami románů Nevolnost Jeana-Paula Sartra a Cizinec Alberta Camuse.
