The effect of pseudo 3D and 3D representation on depth perception

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo ověřit, zda pseudo 3D zobrazení může poskytnout stejné množství informací o hloubce v prostoru jako reálné 3D. Pojmem pseudo 3D zobrazení je myšleno zobrazení trojrozměrných objektů na dvourozměrném obraze. (Reálné) 3D je stereoskopické zobrazení za využití 3D brýlí. Za vjemem hloubky stojí tzv. vodítka hloubky, která se uplatňují v obou typech zobrazení. Ve 3D v podobě binokulární disparity a v pseudo 3D byla díky pohyblivým scénám vytvořena pohybová paralaxa. Za účelem ověření hypotézy byla navržena vlastní testová metoda a ve spolupráci s Fakultou informatiky aplikace sloužící k záznamu odpovědí. V rámci testu se probandům promítaly krátké animace a statické obrázky plochy s rozličnými geometrickými objekty. Probandi měli dle předkreslené plochy v rámci aplikace tyto objekty správně zakreslit, vzhledem k jejich umístění, velikosti a rotaci. Aplikace zaznamenávala přesnost umístění na základě zhotoveného klíče správných odpovědí.

Abstract:

The aim of this master thesis was to find evidence whether pseudo 3D representation can provide the same amount of information about spatial depth as much as real 3D representation. The term pseudo 3D representation stands for imaging of three dimensional objects within a two-dimensional image. (Real) 3D is stereoscopic imaging done through utilisation of 3D (stereoscopic) glasses. In the background of depth perception stand depth cues, which are utilised in both types of imaging. In 3D this is achieved through binocular disparity and in pseudo 3D, through motion parallax produced by moving scenes. In order to test the hypothesis, an original test method was designed and in cooperation with Faculty of informatics, an application for input of responses was devised. Testing was carried out through projections of short animations and static pictures of various geometric objects on a plane. Test subjects’ task was to correctly plot, position and scale these objects within the framework of the test application. The application tested the precision of the test subject’s input as per the correct answers key.
