Religion in Liberal Democracy: Analysis of the discussion between Robert Audi and Nicholas Wolterstorff on the Role of Religion in Public Square

Abstract:

Religion in public square seems to be endured rather than accepted in our political environment. People using arguments that may have something to do with religion are accused of violating the principle of secularity, enshrined in the constitution, or of discriminating against citizens who have other religious views. However, judgements like this are usually not preceded by a thorough argumentation; also, in the Slovak or Czech academic space there is a lack of a deeper analysis of this issue. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the discussion between two American philosophers, Robert Audi and Nicholas Wolterstorff, on the role of religion, religious arguments and motivations in public space, and their acceptability in a liberal democracy. Through the analysis of this classical debate between two well-founded American philosophers, who are among the most important thinkers in this field in the Anglo-Saxon world, this thesis has the ambition to contribute to the debate in the Slovak and Czech political science area.

Abstract:

Náboženstvo vo verejnom priestore sa zdá byť v našom prostredí skôr trpené ako vítané. Ľudia používajúci argumenty, ktoré môžu mať niečo spoločné s náboženstvom, sú často obviňovaní z porušovania zásady sekulárnosti, zakotvenou v ústave alebo z diskriminácie občanov, ktorí majú iné náboženské názory. Podobným súdom však zväčša nepredchádza dôkladnejšia argumentácia, a aj v slovenskom resp. v českom odbornom priestore chýba hlbšia analýza tejto problematiky. Cieľom tejto práce je analýza diskusie medzi dvoma americkými filozofmi Robertom Audim a Nicholasom Wolterstorffom o roli náboženstva, o náboženských argumentoch a motiváciách vo verejnom priestore a ich prípustnosti v rámci liberálnej demokracie. Prostredníctvom analýzy tejto klasickej debaty medzi dvoma fundovanými americkými filozofmi, ktorí v anglosaskom priestore patria medzi najvýznamnejších mysliteľov v tejto oblasti, si táto práca dáva ambíciu prispieť do debaty aj v slovenskom a českom politologickom priestore.
