Ancient Greece and its contribution to modern diplomacy.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is devoted to the analysis and evaluation of the contribution of ancient Greece to modern diplomacy. The thesis aims to identify key aspects of ancient diplomatic practices and theories and their lasting influence on contemporary international relations and diplomatic processes. The thesis systematically examines the political, legal, and philosophical foundations laid by the city-states of ancient Greece, which shaped the basic principles and structures that underpin contemporary international diplomacy. Specific historical cases and examples are discussed, such as the importance of Athenian democracy, the development of diplomacy in the Hellenistic leagues, and the influence of thinkers such as Plato and Aristotle on the elaboration of concepts of justice and ethics that are still applicable in international relations today. The thesis also highlights the development and importance of rhetoric and persuasion in diplomatic discourse, which had their roots in the ancient period and still form the basic tools of diplomatic communication today. The study focuses on the links between ancient and modern diplomacies and highlights how historical lessons can help in addressing contemporary international challenges. The thesis argues that although contexts change, many of the principles established in ancient Greece, such as multilateralism, the rule of law, and an emphasis on dialogue and negotiation, remain key components of effective foreign policy. Finally, the thesis emphasizes the importance of continuing education in history and classical studies for modern diplomats, enabling them to better understand and navigate the complex world of international relations.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa venuje analýze a hodnoteniu prínosu antického Grécka pre modernú diplomaciu. Cieľom práce je identifikovať kľúčové aspekty antických diplomatických praktík a teórií a ich trvalý vplyv na súčasné medzinárodné vzťahy a diplomatické procesy. Práca systematicky skúma politické, právne a filozofické základy, ktoré položili mestské štáty starovekého Grécka a ktoré formovali základné princípy a štruktúry, na ktorých stojí súčasná medzinárodná diplomacia. V rámci práce sa venujeme konkrétnym historickým prípadom a príkladom, ako je napríklad význam aténskej demokracie, rozvoj diplomacie v helénskych ligách, či vplyv mysliteľov ako sú Platón a Aristoteles na rozpracovanie konceptov spravodlivosti a etiky, ktoré sú dodnes aplikovateľné v medzinárodných vzťahoch. Práca tiež poukazuje na vývoj a význam rétoriky a persvázie v diplomatickom diskurze, ktoré mali svoje korene v antickom období a dodnes tvoria základné nástroje diplomatickej komunikácie. Štúdia sa zameriava na prepojenie medzi antickými a modernými diplomaciami a zdôrazňuje, ako historické lekcie môžu pomôcť pri riešení súčasných medzinárodných výziev. Práca argumentuje, že hoci sa kontexty menia, mnohé z princípov zavedených v antickom Grécku, ako sú multilateralizmus, právny štát a dôraz na dialóg a rokovania, zostávajú kľúčovými komponentmi efektívnej zahraničnej politiky. Záverom práca zdôrazňuje význam kontinuálneho vzdelávania v oblasti histórie a klasických štúdií pre moderných diplomatov, umožňujúc im tak lepšie pochopiť a navigovať v komplexnom svete medzinárodných vzťahov.
