Economic cooperation between CMEA and EEC with example of Czechoslovakia and Great Britain cooperation in 1973-1989

Abstract:

Práce analyzuje hospodářské vztahy mezi RVHP a EHS v letech 1973-1989 na příkladu Československa a Velké Británie. Vztahy mezi oběma zeměmi byly v tomto období determinovány členstvím ve zmíněných organizacích. Jejich fungováním se zabývá teoretická část, stejně jako vývojem vzájemných vztahů mezi těmito organizacemi. Na formy a vývoj spolupráce mezi RVHP a EHS navazuje obchodní spolupráce mezi Československem a Velkou Británií. Záměrem práce je zhodnotit z československého pohledu spolupráci těchto zemí z hlediska kvalitativního a kvantitativního. Součástí kvalitativního výzkumu byla analýza primárních dokumentů z Archivu Ministerstva zahraničních věcí České republiky a bilaterálních smluv mezi Velkou Británií a Československem. Pro Československo byla Velká Británie zdrojem technologií a inovací, přestože ze zpráv ministerstva vyplývá, že zejména v oblasti technické spolupráce byl prostor pro zlepšení vztahů. Součástí výzkumu je analýza primárních statistických dat zahraničního obchodu z hlediska teritoriální a komoditní struktury, která je předmětem analytické části. Vzájemný obchod mezi Velkou Británií a Československem byl z hlediska objemu ovlivněn zejména politickou situací v obou zemích, respektive mírou tolerance socialistického režimu ze strany Velké Británie. Dalším významným determinantem byla společná obchodní politika EHS, která ovlivňovala vztahy Velké Británie a Československa. Na základě těchto determinantů byl celkový obrat mezi Velkou Británií a Československem nejvýznamnější v polovině 70. let. Zároveň od poloviny 70. let obě země navázaly spolupráci v oblasti technologií a inovací. Ze statistických dat vyplývá, že komoditní struktura dovozu z Velké Británie zahrnovala převážně stroje pro výrobu finálních produktů. Kooperace byla přínosná zejména pro ČSSR, která zaostávala, stejně jako ostatní socialistické země, v technické kvalitě výrobků za západní Evropou.

Abstract:

The thesis analyzes economic relations between RVHP and EHS in 1973-1989 on the example of Czechoslovakia and Great Britain. Relations between the two countries were determined in this period by membership in these organizations. Their functioning is described in the theoretical part, as well as the development of mutual relations between these organizations. The forms and development of cooperation between the CMEA and EEC is followed by trade cooperation between Czechoslovakia and Great Britain. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate from the Czechoslovak perspective the cooperation of these countries in terms of qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative research included analysis of primary documents from the Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and bilateral agreements between Great Britain and Czechoslovakia. The United Kingdom was source of technology and innovation for Czechoslovakia, although reports from the Foreign Ministry shows that there was an opportunity to improve relations, especially in the area of technical cooperation. Part of the research is to analyze primary statistical data of external trade in terms of territorial, which is the aim of the analytical part. Foreign trade turnover between Great Britain and Czechoslovakia was influenced in particular by the political situation in both countries and the degree of tolerance of the socialist regime by Great Britain. Another important determinant was the EEC's common commercial policy, which influenced relations between Great Britain and Czechoslovakia. Based on these determinants, the total turnover between Great Britain and Czechoslovakia was most significant in the mid-1970´s. At the same time, since the mid-1970s, both countries have established cooperation in technology and innovation. Statistical data shows that the commodity structure of imports from the UK were mainly machines for the production of final products. The cooperation was more convenient for the CSSR than the UK because of the products of Czechoslovakia and other socialist countries had a lower technical quality.
