Analysis of the Influence of Heavy Metal Alloying on the Segregation Process in Al-Si alloys

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem niklu v různých procentuálních koncentracích na proces gravitační segregace u vybraných podeutektických slitin typu Al-Si. U vybraných slitin byly zkoumány i některé mechanické vlastnosti. Pro výzkum byly vybrány tři slitiny: AlSi7Mg0,3Ni6, AlSi7Mg0,3Ni9, AlSi7Mg0,3Ni12. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí. První část (teoretická) se zabývá problematikou Al-Si slitin, jejich vlastnostmi, technologií výroby hliníku a primárně krystalizací, segregací, měřením mikrotvrdosti a tvrdosti. Druhá část (praktická) se zabývá celým procesem přípravy slitin, odlitím do speciální kovové formy, přípravou vzorků a jejich následnou analýzou pomocí optického mikroskopu a elektronového mikroskopu. Bylo analyzováno chemické složení odlitků s předpokladem gravitační segregace niklu, měření mikrotvrdosti tuhého roztoku hliníku dle Vickerse, tvrdosti dle Brinella a mez pevnosti v tahu. Bylo připraveno celkem 36 metalografických výbrusů, od každé slitiny 12. Vzorky byly odebrány z každého odlitku z každé ze šesti dutin formy, vždy z horní části a ze spodní části odlitku. Závěrem práce je vyhodnocení, porovnání dat a závěr.

Abstract:

This Master's thesis investigates the effect of nickel concentration on gravity segregation in selected hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys and evaluates their corresponding mechanical properties. The experimental research was conducted on three specific alloys: AlSi7Mg0.3Ni6, AlSi7Mg0.3Ni9, and AlSi7Mg0.3Ni12. The thesis is structured into two primary sections; the theoretical part addresses the characteristics of Al-Si alloys, aluminum production technologies, and fundamental metallurgical processes, including crystallization, segregation, and the principles of hardness and microhardness measurement, while the practical section details the alloy preparation, gravity die casting into specialized metal molds, and subsequent metallographic specimen preparation. Material characterization was performed using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), with an analytical focus on the chemical composition of the castings to verify the predicted gravity segregation of nickel. Experimental measurements included Vickers microhardness of the aluminum solid solution, Brinell hardness, and ultimate tensile strength. A total of 36 metallographic specimens were prepared, representing 12 samples per alloy, which were extracted from both the upper and lower regions of each of the six mold cavities to ensure a comprehensive mapping of the segregation profile. The thesis concludes with a systematic evaluation and comparative analysis of the obtained experimental data.
