Comparative Analysis of the Age of Innocence and The Portrait of a Lady

Anotace:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat rozdíly ve vykreslení evropské a americké společnosti v dílech Portrét dámy od Henryho Jamese a Věk nevinnosti od Edith Whartonové. Příběhy těchto knih jsou zasazeny do druhé poloviny devatenáctého století. Tato éra se nazývá Pozlacený věk ve Spojených státech a prolíná se s Viktoriánskou érou ve Velké Británii. První část této práce se snaží zmíněné romány vymezit v literárním a socio - ekonomickém kontextu této doby. Dále se zabývá sociálními rolemi mužů a žen, převážně v rámci tzv. zahálčivé třídy. Kapitoly pět a šest se zaměřují na zobrazení konkrétních mužských a ženských postav v obou knihách. Postavy žen jsou zkoumány z hlediska jejich tužeb a vztahu ke konvencím a mužům. Mužské postavy jsou charakterizovány na základě způsobu trávení času, vztahu ke konvencím a ženám. Poslední kapitola dále rozvíjí spojení mezi Isabelou a Newlandem Archerem za účelem bližšího pochopení a srovnání těchto postav.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the differences in portrayal of the European and American societies in The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James and The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. Stories of these books are set in the latter part of the 19th century in the era known as the Gilded Age. It overlaps with the Victorian Era in Great Britain. Therefore, the first part of the work tries to put the novels in literary and socio-economic context of that period. It also deals with the role of men and women in society while paying special attention to the leisure class. Chapters five and six concentrate on the depiction of female and male characters in the novels. This work looks at the lives of women from the perspective of their relationships to conventions, men and their desires. Similarly, men are characterized on the basis of their occupation, relationship to conventions and women. The last chapter further explores the connection between Isabel and Newland Archer in order to achieve better comprehension of the characters.
