Saramago and his Gospel According to Jesus Christ: Thousands true interpretations of the “only possible story”

Abstract:

This thesis is based on four canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and the unique literary actualization Gospel According to Jesus Christ written by José Saramago. Since Saramago describes in the first chapter famous Dürer’s graphics called Crucifixion of Christ, the thesis initially observes adaptations of selected biblical motives from life of Jesus Christ which appear in fine arts in european context form Renaissance to Modernism. The emphasis is put on the motive of crucifixion, which gains new adaptations especially in the first half of the 20st century. For reason s already stated in the previous work Sou eu o responsável por meu irmão? Caim segundo Saramago: A transformação do anti-herói bíblico no herói literário, the 20st century brings new perception of the original story, which admit the possibility of other than canonical interpretations of the biblical story. This phenomenon is observed in literary (The Last Temptation, The Amazing Journey of Pompónio Flato and Gospel According to Jesus Christ) and movie (The Last Temptation and The Passion of the Christ) adaptations in euro-american context from the second half of the 20st century until today. The aim of this thesis is the analysis of how the selected literary and film adaptations transform the original biblical story of Jesus Christ.

Abstract:

Výchozím textem této práce jsou čtyři kanonická evangelia podle Matouše, Marka, Lukáše a Jana a jejich unikátní literární aktualizace v podobě románu José Saramaga, Evangelium podle Ježíše Krista. Protože Saramago v úvodní kapitole popisuje slavnou Dürerovu grafiku Ukřižování Krista, práce nejprve sleduje zpracování vybraných biblických motivů ze života Ježíše Krista ve výtvarném umění v evropském kontextu od renesance až po modernu. Důraz je přitom kladen na motiv ukřižování, který získává nová zpracování zejména v první polovině 20. století. Z důvodů, které autorka práce uvedla již v práci Sou eu o responsável por meu irmão? Caim segundo Saramago: A transformação do anti-herói bíblico no herói literário přináší 20. století nové interpretace původního příběhu, které připouštějí možnost jiných, než kanonických výkladů. Práce sleduje tento fenomén u literárních (Poslední pokušení, Podivuhodná cesta Pomponia Flata a Evangelium podle Ježíše Krista) a filmových (Poslední pokušení a Umučení Krista) adaptací v euroamerickém kontextu od poloviny 20. století až po současnost. Cílem práce je analýza toho, zda vybraná literární a filmová díla respektují původní novozákonní příběh, nebo zda jej obohacují, či dokonce transformují.
