Reflections on the contest for Czech university at Moravia in Lidové noviny, Moravská orlice and Rovnost

Abstract:

Ne vždy jednoduché soužití Čechů a Němců v národnostně smíšeném městě Brně dávalo na počátku 20. století vzniknout řadě politických i společenských konfliktů. Jedním z nich byl i boj o druhou českou univerzitu, která měla demonstrovat národnostní i kulturní emancipaci Čechů v tzv. německém Brně. Zápas se vedl na stranách dobového tisku i v ulicích moravských měst. Tato diplomová práce mapuje pomocí diskurzivní analýzy reakce v česky psaném tisku: konzervativně-liberální Moravské orlici, sociálně-demokratické Rovnosti a liberálních Lidových novinách. Konflikt za českou univerzitu na Moravě gradoval v období manifestací v říjnu roku 1905, v červnu 1907 a naposledy v březnu roku 1908. Zápas za rozšíření českého vysokého školství kolidoval s národnostními boji Čechů a Němců například v souvislosti s volebním právem i jazykovými zákony. Mediální reprezentace boje za českou univerzitu na Moravě je tu nahlížena z pohledu jednotlivých titulů i v průběhu času.

Abstract:

Not always easy coexistence of Czechs and Germans in the ethnically mixed city of Brno gave the early 20th century a number of political and social conflicts. One of which was the struggle for the second Czech university, which demonstrated the ethnic and cultural emancipation of the Czechs in mostly 'so called' german Brno. The fight was led on the pages of the contemporary press as well as in the streets of Moravian towns. This thesis utilises discourse analysis to map the response of Czech written press: conservative-liberal Moravská Orlice, social-democratic Rovnost and liberal Lidové noviny. The fight for having Czech university in Moravia culminated in the demonstrations in October 1905, in June 1907 and for the last time in March 1908. The battle for the expansion of Czech higher education coincided with national struggle between Czechs and Germans, for example, in connection with the electoral law and the language laws. Media depictions of the fight for first Czech university in Moravia is looked on from both, perspective of individual newspaper titles, and in the course of time.
