Distribution and fate of persistent organic pollutants in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems

Abstract:

Práce je rozdělena na tři části pokrývající různé oblasti studia osudu perzistentních organických polutantů. První část se věnuje těkání polychlorovaných bifenylů a organochlorových pesticidů z půdního povrchu a stanovaní jejich vytěkávacích toků. Schopnost kvantifikovat výměnu látek mezi půdou a atmosférou může být velmi důležitá pro porozumění roli půdy v osudu perzistentních organických polutantů. Jelikož je výměna látek mezi půdou a atmosférou jedním z klíčových procesů kontrolujících hladinu POP v atmosféře, jsou laboratorní simulace vytěkávání z půdního povrchu potřebné jako zdroj informací pro modelování osudu těchto látek. Byla testována vytěkávací komora vytvořená pro přímé měření vytěkávání perzistentních organických polutantů (POP) z půdního povrchu. Byl studován vliv typu půdy, fyzikálně-chemických vlastností sloučenin a jejich koncentrace v půdě, teploty, vlhkosti a rychlosti větru na rozdělování PCB a OCP mezi půdou a atmosférou. Experimentální data byla porovnána s daty získanými pomocí fugacitního modelu. Druhá část práce se také zabývá terrestrickým ekoystémem, ale je zaměřena na studium osudu chirálních organických sloučenin. Byly stanoveny enantiomerní frakce (EF) PCB 95, 132, 149 a 174, -HCH, o,p′-DDD a o,p′-DDT ve vzorcích půdy. Hodnoty EF vybraných PCB byly dále korelovány s fyzikálně-chemickými a mikrobiálními vlastnostmi půd pro zjištění, které faktory ovlivňují hodnoty EF. Dále byla studována prostorová a časová variablita hodnot EF ve vzorcích půd. V poslední části práce je popsán laboratorní kalibrační experiment s pasivními vzorkovači na bázi silikonové gumy. Vztah mezi rychlostí vzorkování (RS) a rozdělovacím koeficientem oktanol-voda (KOW) byl studován pomocí kalibrační techniky, která nevyžaduje přímé stanovení koncentrace studovaných látek ve vodě. Pro výpočet rychlosti vzorkování je použita rovnovážná koncentrace kontaminantů v dávkovací fólii. Navíc, ztráty z dávkovacího systému (pokud k nim dojde) mohou být snadno stanoveny. Koncentrace ve vodě může být určena pomocí rozdělovacího koeficientu pasivní vzorkovač-voda. Fólie ze silikonové gumy obohacené studovanými látkami mohou být použity jako dávkovací systém, zatímco nekontaminované silikonové folie mohou sloužit pro studium kinetiky příjmu.

Abstract:

The thesis is divided into three parts with the general topic of the environmental fate of persistent organic pollutants. The first part is addressing the processes of volatilization of polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides from soils, and estimating their volatilization fluxes. The ability to quantify the soil-air exchange flux can be very important for understanding the role of soil as a sink or a source of persistent organic pollutants. Since the soil-air exchange is one of the key processes that control levels of persistent organic pollutants in the atmosphere, laboratory simulations of volatilization from the soil surfaces is needed as a source of information for the fate modeling. A volatilization chamber, designed for direct measurements of the persistent organic pollutants volatilization fluxes from the soil in laboratory conditions was tested. An influence of the soil type, physico-chemical properties of model compounds and their concentrations in soils, temperature, humidity, and the wind velocity on the partitioning of PCBs and OCPs between soil and air was investigated. Laboratory data were compared to those obtained from the fugacity model. Second part of the thesis deals also with terrestrial environments but focuses on the fate or chiral organic compounds. Enantiomeric fractions (EF) of PCB 95, 132, 149, and 174, -HCH, o,p′-DDD, and o,p′-DDT were analyzed in the soil samples. EF values of selected PCBs were further correlated with a wide range of physicochemical and microbial soil parameters in an attempt to identify the influential factors. Temporal and spatial variability of such factors as well as EF values was addressed in the follow-up study to estimate a significance of previous findings. In the last part of the thesis, a laboratory calibration experiment of the silicone rubber based passive sampler is presented. A relation of the sampling rate (RS) and octanol-water partitioning coefficient (KOW) was investigated using a calibration technique that does not require direct measurement of dissolved concentrations in water. Instead, the equilibrium concentrations of the contaminants in dosing sheets can be used for calculations of the sampling rates as initially spiked dosing concentrations can be measured. Furthermore, depletion of the dosing system (if occurs) can be easily estimated. Dissolved water concentrations can be predicted from the passive sampler-water partitioning coefficients. Silicone rubber sheets spiked with the compounds of interest were used for the water dosing while non-spiked silicone rubber pieces of much smaller surface were applied for an assessment of the uptake kinetics.
