Effects of elaboration conditions on structural and magnetic properties of SnO2: bulks and thin films

Abstract:

V této práci jsme se věnovali studiu vlivu výrobních podmínek na strukturní a magnetické vlastnosti tenkých vrstev SnO2 vyrobených pomocí pulsní laserové depozice (PLD). Výzkum zahrnuje aplikování různých teplot substrátu, tlaku pracovního plynu a tloušťky tenkých vrstev SnO2. Pomocí těchto podmínek může být možné ovládat kyslíkové vakance a defekty, které by měly být příčinou feromagnetismu tenkých vrstev SnO2 při pokojové teplotě. Vlastnosti tenkých vrstev byly následně srovnány s jejich makroskopickými protějšky – SnO2 práškem a keramickým terčem použitým pro PLD. Strukturní vlastnosti vzorků byly zkoumány pomocí rentgenového difraktometru a magnetické vlastnosti pomocí vibračního magnetometru. Podařilo se nám vytvořit tenkou vrstvu, u které jsme mohli pozorovat feromagnetismus při pokojové teplotě. Předpokládáme, že podmínky, které jsme aplikovali při růstu této vrstvy, jsou nejvhodnější pro vytvoření vhodné koncentrace kyslíkových vakancí a defektů zodpovědných za feromagnetismus. Feromagnetismus navíc nebyl pozorován u tlustší vrstvy, což ukazuje na důležitou roli nízké dimenzionality v tomto typu sloučenin.

Abstract:

In this work, we have investigated the effects of fabrication conditions on the structural and magnetic properties of SnO2 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). This study consists of applying various substrate temperatures, ambient gas pressure, and thicknesses of SnO2 films. With these conditions, it may be possible to control oxygen vacancies and defects which are supposed to be the cause of the room temperature ferromagnetism (FM) of SnO2 thin films. The properties of the thin films were then compared to their macroscopic counterparts, i.e., SnO2 powders and a ceramic target that was used for PLD. The structural and magnetic properties of the samples have been investigated by using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. We have succeeded in creating a thin film in which we could observe room temperature FM. Therefore, the conditions that we applied for the growth of this film are assumed to be the most suitable in order to produce the appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancies and/or defects in SnO2 in order to introduce FM. Besides, the FM was not introduced in a thicker film indicating an important role of low dimensionality in this type of compound.
