Feuerbach’s Theorem in Triangle Geometry

Abstract:

Tato závěrečná doktorandská práce je věnována rozmanitým elementárním důkazům Feuerbachovy věty. Podle ní se kružnice devíti bodů daného rovinného trojúhelníku dotýká čtyř kružnic: kružnice jemu vepsané a tří kružnic připsaných stranám tohoto trojúhelníku. Nejdříve je prezentován původní důkaz K. W. Feuerbacha (1822), a to v nové adaptaci pro dnešní čtenáře. Poté se práce zaměřuje na dalších 15 důkazů, pečlivě vybraných a upravených z mnoha dostupných zdrojů, které byly vydány až do roku 2010. Je tím prokázána pestrost škály možných přístupů k důkazu Feuerbachovy věty takovými elementárními geometrickými prostředky, jakými jsou užití kolmých průmětů, stejnolehlosti dotýkajících se kružnic, Pappovy úlohy, Ptolemaiova věta, kolmost kružnic, kruhové inverze a skalární součin vektorů. Závěrem text práce obsahuje krátký životopis K. W. Feuerbacha.

Abstract:

This PhD thesis is devoted to various elementary proofs of Feuerbach's theorem. According to it, the nine point circle of a given plane triangle touches each of four circles: the inscribed circle and the three circles escribed to the sides of the triangle. First, the original proof by K. W. Feuerbach (1822) is presented in a new adaptation for today's readers. The thesis then focuses on further 15 proofs, carefully selected and edited from the many available sources, which were published up to 2010. This demonstrates the diversity of the range of possible approaches to the proof of Feuerbach's theorem by such elementary geometric tools as the use of orthogonal projections, homotheties of touching circles, problems of Pappus, Ptolemy's theorem, orthogonality of two circles, circular inversions and scalar product of vectors. In conclusion, the text of the thesis contains a short biography of K. W. Feuerbach.
