Stereotypes of Victims and Perpetrators in a TV Program "Home Alone"

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářská práce je identifikovat stereotypy v zobrazování obětí a pachatelů domácího násilí v televizním pořadu Sama doma. Všímá si osobnosti pachatele a oběti domácího násilí a také teorií, které se k problematice vztahují. Jedná se zejména o teorii biologickou, psychopatologickou, rodinného systému, sociálního učení a feministickou. Text se dále soustředí na stereotypy o domácím násilí, které se ve společnosti vyskytují, a také na otázku genderové symetrie a asymetrie v domácím násilí. Práce vychází z analýzy deseti pořadů Sama doma zaměřených na domácí násilí, které byly vysílány Českou televizí od září roku 2006 do března roku 2009. Mezi stereotypy, které byly kvalitativní analýzou potvrzeny, patří zejména individualizace oběti domácího násilí či chápání vztahu jako investice, které se žena nemá jen tak vzdát. Dále se v pořadu projevila typizace domácího násilí pomocí extrémního fyzického násilí, expertizace vědění a důraz na ženy-pachatelky. Důležitým zjištěním je také absence osobnosti pachatele domácího násilí, čímž nemohly být některé stereotypy potvrzeny či vyvráceny. Výsledek práce je ovlivněn úzkým okruhem expertek, které se k tématu vyjadřovaly, a také relativně krátkým časovým úsekem, v němž bylo možné pořady zpětně analyzovat. Celkový rozsah práce je 82 485 znaků.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to identify stereotypes of victims and perpetrators as they are presented in a TV program “Home Alone“. The paper focuses on the personality of the perpetrator and the victim and also on the theories connected to this problem. There are discussed following theories: biological one, psychopathological, theory of family system, social learning theory and feminist one. The text also focuses on the stereotypes about domestic violence, that appear in the society, but it also mentions the question of gender symmetry and asymmetry in the domestic violence. The paper is based on the analysis of ten episodes “Home Alone,” that were broadcasted from September 2006 to March 2009. Some stereotypes were confirmed in the qualitative analyses; especially the individualization of the problem and the understanding of the relationship as an investment that women should not give up. There is also evidence, that domestic violence is typized through the extreme cases of physical abuse and the emphasis is put on women-perpetrators. The main finding is also the absence of the perpetrator of the domestic violence that results in impossibility to confirm or uproot some stereotypes. The outcome is also affected by a small number of experts that were invited to the programme as well as the short period of time in which the episodes were broadcasted. The extent of this paper is 82 485 characters.
