Štúdium konformácie proteínov je nevyhnutnou podmienkou pre pochopenie molekulárnych procesov prebiehajúcich v bunke. Metódy ako röntgenová kryštalografia alebo nukleárna magnetická rezonancia umožňujú získanie informácie o 3D štruktúre proteínu, avšak neumožňujú štúdium proteínov v ich natívnom prostredí.
