Morphology of the Diminutive from the Diachronic Perspective: A Comparative Analysis of English, Slovak and Czech

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with a frequently studied topic of diminutives only this time from a fresh perspective. Diminutives are studied diachronically with the main focus on their actual pragmatic use in historical literary texts. The dissertation contains a theoretical and an analytical part. The former discusses the somewhat problematic notions of the diminutive meaning and form both diachronically and synchronically. It then introduces the framework of historical pragmatics and, finally, maps the relevant diminutive inventories available in English, Slovak and Czech. While the main locus is on suffixation, the dissertation also discusses English analytic diminutives to do justice to a seemingly growing number of scholars who emphasize their diminutive-like nature. The analytical part opens with case studies and then addresses two research questions ? a) What is the pragmatic use of diminutives in the diachrony of English, Slovak and Czech? b) What is the frequency of diminutives across the main development stages of the three languages? The three languages are studied across their most important development stages. Each period is covered by a 25,000 token corpus. Our discussion provides both interesting findings and offers further research options.

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá často študovanou témou deminutív, ale prináša čerstvý pohľad. Deminutíva analyzujeme diachrónne s dôrazom na ich pragmatické použitie v historických literárnych textoch. Práca je delená na teoretickú a analytickú časť. V prvej časti sa venujeme problematickým aspektom významu a tvaru deminutív, predstavujeme teoretický rámec diachrónnej pragmatiky a napokon mapujeme spôsoby tvorenia deminutív v angličtine, slovenčine a češtine. Aj keď hlavný dôraz je na sufixy, taktiež sa venujeme anglickým analytickým deminutívam, ktorých sémantika si získava stále väčšiu pozornosť jazykovedcov. Analytická časť odpovedá na dve výskumné otázky a) Aké je pragmatické použitie deminutív v diachrónnom vývoji angličtiny, slovenčiny a češtiny? b) Aká je frekvencia deminutív v daných jazykoch naprieč storočiami? Jazyky skúmame v ich hlavných vývinových obdobiach, pričom každú fázu analyzujeme v korpuse obsahujúcom 25 000 tokenov. Záverečná diskusia ponúka zaujímavé zistenia a možnosti ďalšieho výskumu.
