Queer indetity in young adult literature

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vývojem homosexuality, podle aspektů společných pro psychologické modely vývoje homosexuality, a jejím zobrazením ve čtyřech románech pro mládež. Tyto romány jsou Annie on My Mind (1982), Stitches (2003), Swimming in the Monsoon Sea (2005) a Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2012). V první, teoretické, části definuje literaturu pro mládež a její čtenáře. Dále pak zmiňuje vývoj queer literatury pro mládež a její nejčastější znaky. Na to navazují kapitoly zabývající se queer studii v USA, především zaměřené na gaye a lesbičky. Dále se zabývá lidskou sexualitou a situací queer teenagerů. Druhá část na základě uvedené teorie analyzuje vybrané romány pro mládež, které mají jako hlavní postavu homosexuálního teenagera a jejich součástí je i tématika vývoje sexuality.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with four queer young adult novels and the portrayal of the development of homosexuality on the basis of features shared by numerous psychological models of development of homosexuality. The chosen novels are Annie on My Mind (1982), Stitches (2003), Swimming in the Monsoon Sea (2005) and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (2012). In the first theoretical part, literature for young adults and their readers are defined, followed by the outline of queer young adult literature and its most prevalent features. Next chapters deal with queer criticism in the USA with the focus on gays and lesbians. Furthermore, next chapters define human sexuality and outline the circumstances of queer youth. The second part is an analysis which on the basis of the given theory, analyses selected novels which have homosexual teenagers as main characters and their theme is the topic of development of sexuality.
