Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá děly tří amerických židovských autorek píšících ve dvacátém století. Předmětem práce je autorka Anzia Yezierska a její dílo Arrogant Beggar, Lynne Sharon Schwartz se svým Leaving Brooklyn, a román The Puttermesser Papers od Cynthie Ozick. Anzia Yezierska se ve svém díle soustředí na americkou imigrantskou zkušenost. Její román ukazuje realitu charitních domovů pro pracující ženy, které byly v Americe běžné v počátečních fázích dvacátého století. Ve svém díle líčí osud mladé ženy, která se musí vypořádat s těžkými pracovními podmínkami a najde útočiště právě v takovém domově. Román Yezierské pojednává o otázce ženské identity a líčí silnou vůli cílevědomé mladé židovské ženy. Lynne Sharon Schwartz ve svém díle pojednává o realitě v poválečné Americe. Mezi jinými poukazuje na fenomén pocitu prázdna jako následek Druhé světové války, ve své práci se zabývá pojmem židovské matky a zdůrazňuje závažnost společenské role ženského těla. Cynthia Ozick je autorkou oddanou židovskému dědictví, židovský prvek je tedy neodloučitelnou součástí jejího díla. Ozick se věnuje otázce vztahu tradicionalismu a modernity a ptá se na pozici moderní ženy v současném světě. Tato literární díla slouží jako základ pro zkoumání definicí jevů jako je americká židovská literatura psaná ženami, imigrantská zkušenost či židovská ženská identita. Navzdory tomu, že jsou autorky řazeny mimo literární kánon své doby, jejich poslání je obohacující a univerzální v širším kontextu.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with three 20th century Jewish American women authors and their novels: Anzia Yezierskaʼs Arrogant Beggar, Lynne Sharon Schwartzʼs Leaving Brooklyn, and Cynthia Ozickʼs Puttermesser Papers. Anzia Yezierska is a representant of the fiction concentrating on the immigrant experience in America. Her novel is a portrayal of the charity-run boarding homes in the early phases of the twentieth century. In this context, she devotes her writing to the fate of a young woman having to cope with uneasy working conditions and having to escape the traps of fate in the boarding home for working women. Yezierskaʼs novel challenges the questions of the female identity and strong will of a goal-oriented young Jewish woman. Lynne Sharon Schwartz elaborates on the reality of postwar America in her writing. Among others, Schwartz touches upon the notion of the empty self as a consequence of WWII, incorporates the person of a Jewish mother in her novel, and underlines the relevance of the social role of a female body. Cynthia Ozick, an author very much devoted to the Jewish heritage, significanlgy incorporates the Jewish element in her writing. Ozickʼs challenge is the question of traditionalism vs. modernity and a modern womanʼs position in the contemporary world. The examples serve as bases to the search for definitions of phenomena such as the Jewish American literature written by women and the Jewish female identity. Although the authors stand outside the literary canon of their times, their messages are nevertheless universally applicable and enriching in a wider context.
