Buddhist Philosopher Shantideva and his Ethics

Abstract:

Tato práce si pokládá otázku, co tvoří základní charakteristiku etiky Šántidévy (7.-8. stol. n. l.), buddhistického mnicha, filosofa a básníka, a jaké výsledky má adeptům/adeptkám mahájány přinést. Roli ústředního textu hraje jeho dílo Bódhičarjávatára, které je pro pochopení Šántidévovy etiky klíčové. Ústřední teze zní, že "šántidévovské" chápání soucitu má z pohledu rozličných interpretací, které jsou v práci představeny, různé roviny. Studie zrekapituluje zásadní shody a rozdíly v těchto pojetích. Druhá část studie bude zkoumat vlivy Šántidévovy etiky a budou představeni současní badatelé a buddhisté, kteří se jí zabývají. V této části práce předloží přehled jejich interpretací spolu s jejich pojetím soucitu.

Abstract:

The thesis raises the question of what constitutes the fundamental characteristic of Śantideva's (7th-8th century CE) ethics and what results it should bring to Mahayana practitioners. The central text in this regard is his work Bodhicaryavatara, which is crucial for understanding Śantideva's ethics. The central thesis is that the understanding of compassion in the Shantidevan sense has various dimensions. The study will recapitulate significant agreements and differences in these conceptions. The second part of the thesis will examine the influences of Śantideva's ethics and will introduce contemporary researches and Buddhists who engage with his ethics. In this section, the work will provide an overview of their interpretations along with their understanding of compassion.
