Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá základními mezilidskými vztahy, předně ženskou (ne)závislostí vyobrazenou v díle The Hours Michaela Cunninghama. Práce také zohledňuje dílo Paní Dallowayová Virginie Woolfové: neboť novela The Hours je přepracováním tohoto klasického díla. Cílem této práce je zaměřit se na důležité aspekty manželství a mateřství, které radikálně formují život ženy. Vlivy společnosti, kultury, vzdělávání, rodinného zázemí, náboženství a historie na ženskou nezávislost jsou rovněž vzaty v úvahu. Všechny výše uvedené jevy následně vedou ať už k naplnění očekávání ženy, či k úplné samotě a frustraci. Práce se snaží sledovat a zachytit pátrání hlavních protagonistů po nezávislosti. Teoretická část obsahuje biografie autorů spolu s celkovým pohledem na skutečnosti, které ovlivnily autory při psaní jejich děl. Terminologie týkající se (ne)závislosti a podstatné boje za nezávislost žen v historii jsou zde také zahrnuty. Praktická část je zaměřena na analýzu diskurzu nezávislosti žen, který je v románu vylíčen. Kromě toho práce obsahuje děj Cunninghamova románu s jeho hlavními tématy a symboly, stejně tak jako zkoumání rozdílů a podobností, které lze nalézt v tomto díle a jeho filmové adaptaci.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with fundamental human relationships, prominently with women’s (in)dependence portrayed in Michael Cunningham’s The Hours. The thesis also takes into account Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway as The Hours recasts this classical work. The aim of this thesis is to focus on important aspects of maternity and matrimony that radically shape and influence women’s lives. The impact of society, culture, education, religion, family background and history on women’s independence is thus also taken into consideration. All the above mentioned factors may consequently lead to either fulfilling woman’s expectations, or to a complete solitude and frustration. The work attempts to trace and analyze the main protagonists’ quest for independence. The theoretical part contains authors’ biographies along with a general overview of those instances that influenced them in writing their works. The terminology concerning “(in)dependence” and a brief overview of major struggles for women’s independence in history are also included. The practical part focuses on the analysis of the discourse of women’s (in)dependence portrayed in Cunningham’s novel. In addition, it provides the plot of The Hours with its main themes and symbols as well as the examination of the differences and similarities that can be found in Cunningham’s novel and its film adaptation.
