Genetic diversity of the Indo-Pacific symbiotic shrimps of the genus Coralliocaris (Crustacea: Decapoda: Palaemonidae)

Abstract:

Krevety rodu Coralliocaris jsou obligátními symbionty indo-tichomořských úteso-tvorných korálů řádu Scleractinia, především větevníků rodu Acropora a Pocillopora. V současnosti rod zahrnuje 11 známých druhů. Cílem této práce bylo vypracování rešerše o systematice a biologii rodu a provedení analýzy tvarových a barevných morfotypů na základě předběžné molekulární fylogeneze rodu. Materiál zahrnuje vzorky a barevné fotografie jedinců z Rudého moře, Taiwanu, Papuy Nové Guiney a Velkého bariérového útesu. Analyzováno bylo 55 jedinců z přibližně 8 druhů, byly získány sekvence genetického markeru COI mtDNA z 26 vzorků krevet Coralliocaris. Výsledky molekulárních analýz vedly k vyčlenění šesti širších skupin představujících buď jeden určitý druh, nebo druhové komplexy. Celkem lze vyčlenit až 13 monofyletických skupin s nízkou vnitřní genetickou divergencí, svědčících o tom, že diverzita rodu Coralliocaris je širší, a daný rod zahrnuje i dosud nepopsané druhy. Analýza tvarových a barevných morfotypů potvrdila bazální odštěpení C. graminea jako předtavitele krevet se zvukotvorným aparátem na klepetech 2. páru pereopodů, a monofylii druhového koplexu C. superba se zahroceným bazálním výrůstkem daktylu kráčivých noh a nápadným bílým zbarvením přední části těla. Jako geneticky kompaktní se rovněž projevila skupina vzorků C. nudirostris s labyrintovou kresbou na těle a bílými skvrnami na bocích. Nedořešená zůstává série vzorků předběžně identifikovaných jako C. labyrintha, C. sandyi a C. tridens, které nevytvářejí kompaktní seskupení, a jejich identitu bude nutné podrobit dalším analýzám s použitím dodatečných genových markerů.

Abstract:

Shrimps of the genus Coralliocaris are obligatory symbiotics of the Indo-Pacific Coral reef corals of the order Scleractinia, especially of the genera Acropora and Pocillopora. At present, the genus includes 11 known species. The aim of this work was to provide a short literature review on the systematics and biology of the genus, and to perform an analysis of morphological and colour in relation to present molecular phylogenetic diversification of the genus. The material includes samples and colour photographs of individuals from the Red Sea, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and the Great Barrier Reef. About 55 individuals from approximately 8 species were analysed, the sequence of the genetic marker COI mtDNA from 26 samples of Coralliocaris shrimps was obtained. The results of the molecular analyses led to the subdivision of the examined material onto six broader groups representing either one species or species complexes. In total, up to 13 monophyletic groups with low internal genetic divergence can be identified, indicating that the genus of Coralliocaris species is wider, and that the genus includes undescribed species. The analysis of morphotypes confirmed the basal cleavage of C. graminea as a representant of shrimps with a sound-producing apparatus on claws of the 2nd pair of pereiopods, and the monophyly of the C. superba species complex with a pointed basal lobe on the dactyl of the walking legs, and a distinct white colouration on the anterior part of the body. A group of samples of C. nudirostris with a labyrinth pattern on the body and white spots on the sides were also genetically compact. Unresolved still remains a series of samples pre-identified as C. labyrintha, C. sandyi or C. tridens that do not form compact clusters, and their identity will need to undergo further analysis using additional gene markers.
