A Philosophical Enquiry into Glossolalia

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je předložit komplexní analýzu pojmu glosolálie za účelem poskytnutí hlubšího porozumění tomuto tématu. První část zkoumá glosolálii z hlediska dnešního porozumění tomuto pojmu a druhá část zkoumá pojem glossolálie v biblickém textu za aplikování fenomenologické epoché. Při udržení významu glosolálie jakožto promluvy v neexistujícím jazyce, nejdříve identifikuji glosolálii jako mluvní akt v souladu s Austinovou teorií a vysvětluji důležitost odlišení glosolálie od xenolálie (mluvení v existujícím, cizím jazyce, který se mluvčí nijak neučil). Poté zkoumám biblický text v původních jazycích při odhlédnutí od běžné definice tohoto pojmu a ukazuji, že je možná i jiná interpretace tohoto pojmu v daných kontextech. Předkládám hypotézu, že glossolálie může být v Bibli konzistentně chápána jako tichá modlitba. Význam této práce je v poskytnutí detailního kontextu pojmu glosolálie v originálních jazycích, zdůraznění obtížnosti přesného překladu a zároveň poukázání na odlišnosti existujících překladů. Glosolálie je dnes široce rozšířená a její biblický význam nebývá obvykle zpochybňován. Tato práce může poskytnout impuls k dalším zkoumáním fenoménu glosolálie a hledání impulsů pro její vznik mimo biblický text. Cílem tohoto textu není nahrazení stávající definice glosolálie, ale její rozšíření o jiný možný výklad. Tím chci zejména poukázat na to, že interpretace biblických textů a teologických konceptů, včetně glosolálie, je složitá a nejednoznačná.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to present a comprehensive analysis of the concept of glossolalia in order to provide a deeper understanding of this topic. The first part examines glossolalia from the perspective of contemporary understanding of this term, while the second part investigates the concept of glossolalia in the biblical text applying phenomenological epoché. Maintaining the significance of glossolalia as speech in a non-existent language, I first identify glossolalia as a speech act in accordance with Austin's theory and explain the importance of distinguishing glossolalia from xenolalia (speaking in an existing, foreign language that the speaker has not learned). Then, I explore the biblical text in its original languages, disregarding the common definition of this term, and demonstrate that there may be another interpretation of this term in given contexts. I present the hypothesis that glossolalia can be consistently understood as silent prayer in the Bible. The significance of this work lies in providing a detailed context of the term glossolalia in original languages, emphasizing the difficulty of precise translation, while also highlighting the differences in existing translations. Glossolalia is widely spread today, and its biblical significance is usually unquestioned. This work may stimulate further research into the phenomenon of glossolalia and the search for its origins outside the biblical text. The aim of this text is not to replace the current definition of glossolalia but to expand it to another possible interpretation. Specifically, I aim to highlight that the interpretation of biblical texts and theological concepts, including glossolalia, is complex and ambiguous.
