The Ethnographic Grassi Museum in Leipzig

Abstract:

Lipské etnografické muzeum je nejstarším etnografickým muzeem v Německu a patří v současnosti také k těm nejvýznamnějším. Od roku 2004 se zdejší muzejní sbírka stala součástí „Staatliche Etnographische Sammlungen Sachsen“ (Státních etnografických sbírek Saska). Vznik muzea je kladen do roku 1869, kdy byla odkoupena významná měšťanská sbírka Gustava Friedricha Klemma. Muzeum od tohoto roku existovalo nejprve jako spolek, později jako městské a nakonec jako státní muzeum. Tato práce je od 70.let prvním pokusem o přehledné shrnutí na toto téma a zároveň první informační zdroj o této instituci v českém jazyce. Jejím cílem je stručné nastínění vzniku muzea a jeho následného historického vývoje do současnosti, dále shrnutí jednotlivých lokací muzea od doby jeho vzniku po současnost s charakteristikou současné muzejní budovy, stručný popis sbírkových fondů muzea včetně jejich historie a akvizice a charakteristika muzejní knihovny, která představuje jednu z nejvýznamnějších specializovaných knihoven v Německu. Podle těchto jednotlivých oblastí jsou členěny kapitoly práce, která je pro přehlednost doplněna přílohou s chronologickým přehledem historie muzea v datech a též chronologicky řazeným seznamem lokací muzea.

Abstract:

The Ethnographic Museum in Leipzig is the oldest ethnographic and also one of the most significant museum in Germany today. In 2004 entire museum collection became a part of „Staatliche Etnographische Sammlungen Sachsen“ (State Ethnographic Collections of Saxony). The origin of the museum is dated to 1869 when remarkable collection of townsman Gustav Friedrich Klemm had been acquired. Since then the museum developed from a guild, through a municipal museum a finally to a state museum.This thesis is a first attempt to collect all sorts of information about this institution in the Czech language since 70's of the previous century. Its aim is a brief adumbration of establishment of Museum followed by its development until now. Also summary of various locations of the Museum throughout its history with particular emphasis on todays building, a brief description of collection funds of the Museum including its history and acquisition since their origin until now and a characteristics of the Museum library, which presents one of the most important specialized library in Germany. Chapters of my thesis are driven by this structure and for further clarification a chronological summary of history of the Museum in dates and also a list of locations.
