Európska centrálna banka je inštitúciou, ktorá vznikla v roku 1998 a jej význam sa potvrdil počas vypuknutia a prehlbovania globálnej finančnej krízy. Európska centrálna banka prispôsobovala svoju menovú politiku aktuálnej situácii na finančných trhoch, snažila sa ich regulovať v duchu ozdravenia, udržania likvidity a podpory ekonomického rastu.
