Life of courtesans in the pleasure quarter of Yoshiwara during the Edo period

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá životem žen pracujících v japonské zábavní čtvrti Jošiwara jako kurtizány. Cílem bakalářské práce je odpovědět na otázku, co pro ženy v období Edo znamenalo stát se kurtizánou ve čtvrti Jošiwara. Práce představuje zábavní čtvrť Jošiwara a popisuje okolnosti vzniku zábavní čtvrti a její vývoj v období Edo. Věnuje se také podobě čtvrti, jejím hlavním podnikům a způsobům její administrace. Především se ale práce věnuje životu žen v Jošiwaře pracujících jako kurtizány. Práce tedy zkoumá, za jakých okolností se ženy stávaly kurtizánami v zábavní čtvrti a co pro ně znamenala pracovní smlouva. Práce dále rozebírá systém hodností kurtizán, který se v Jošiwaře využíval pro rozlišení postavení jednotlivých žen. Práce se také zabývá životními podmínkami kurtizán ve čtvrti a pravidly, která ovlivnila každodenní život kurtizán ve čtvrti. V neposlední řadě se práce věnuje tomu, jaké možnosti ženy měly, pokud chtěly ze služby odejít a Jošiwaru opustit.

Abstract:

The thesis covers the life of women working as courtesans in the Japanese pleasure quarter of Yoshiwara. The goal of the thesis was to answer the question what did becoming a courtesan in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter in the Edo period actually meant for the women. The paper describes the pleasure quarter of Yoshiwara, the circumstances of its establishment and its development throughout the Edo period. It covers the changes in the form of the district as well as its main businesses and ways of administration. However, the paper mainly deals with the lives of women who worked in Yoshiwara as courtesans. The author explores the ways in which women became courtesans in the pleasure district and how they were affected by their work contracts. The paper goes on to describe the system of ranks employed in the pleasure district to discern status of particular women. The thesis also covers the living standards of courtesans and the rules of the pleasure quarter that affected courtesan’s daily lives. Finally, the author describes what opportunities women had if they wanted to end their profession and leave Yoshiwara.
