The quality of life of seniors in homes for the elderly

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo posoudit kvalitu života seniorů žijících v domovech pro seniory, získané výsledky porovnat s hodnotami populační normy a posoudit spokojenost seniorů dle místa pobytu. Získané výsledky statisticky vyhodnotit v oblastech významných pro osoby ve vyšším věku ve vztahu k četnosti rodinných návštěv a úrovni soběstačnosti seniorů a zjistit zda se liší vnímání kvality života mezi muži a ženami. Metodika: Výsledný soubor tvořilo 120 respondentů (32 z domova Jesenec, 42 z domova Prostějov, 15 z domova Rokytnice a 31 z domova Boskovice). Výzkumné šetření bylo provedeno s pomocí anonymního dotazníkového šetření. Pro tento účel byl použit standardizovaný dotazník WHOQOL-OLD, Dotazník spokojenosti s péčí a sociodemografický dotazník. Výsledky: V práci byly posuzovány odlišnosti v jednotlivých oblastech kvality života mezi vybranými domovy pro seniory (Domov pro seniory Jesenec, Domov seniorů Prostějov - Nerudova, DpS Městská správy sociálních služeb Boskovice, Domov na zámečku Rokytnice). Dle výsledků se hodnocení respondenty lišilo v oblastech fungování smyslů a blízkých vztahů. Porovnáním získaných výsledků s hodnotami populační normy byly zjištěny statisticky významné rozdíly v oblastech fungování smyslů, nezávislost, blízké vztahy a doméně naplnění, kde byla odchylka od normy nejmenší. Při posuzování jednotlivých oblastí spokojenosti, byl zjištěn statisticky významný rozdíl pouze v oblasti komunikace v Domově na zámečku Rokytnice. Závěr: Z výzkumu vyplývá, že hodnocení kvality života a spokojenosti se mezi seniory v domovech významně neliší. Vzhledem k tomu, že byla seniory udávána spíše nižší kvalita života, je třeba se problematice kvality života v domovech věnovat i nadále a monitorovat faktory, které tuto kvalitu ovlivňují.

Abstract:

Aim: The objective of this research was to assess the quality of life of the elderly living in old people´s homes, compare the results obtained with the values of population norms and assess the satisfaction of the elderly depending on the place of residence. Another objective was to evaluate the results statistically in areas important to the elderly with respect to the frequency of family visits and the level of independence of older people, and to determine whether there is different perception of the quality of life between men and women. Methodology: The final sample consisted of 120 respondents from the homes in Jesenec (32), Prostějov (42), Rokytnice (15), and Boskovice (31). The survey was conducted by means of anonymous questionnaires. For this purpose, the standardized WHOQOL-OLD questionnaire was used as well as a questionnaire evaluating satisfaction with care, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Results: In this paper, differences in individual areas of the quality of life were considered between the selected old people´s homes. (The Home in Jesenec, the Home in Prostějov - Nerudova Street, the Home in Boskovice run by the City administration of social services, and the Home located in the castle in Rokytnice). According to the results, the responses differed depending on how functional the respondents´senses were, and in the area of close relationships. Compared with the values of population norms, the results showed statistically significant differences in the areas of sense functioning, independence, close relationships, and the domain of fulfilment, where the slightest deviation was found. After the examination of the satisfaction ratings, a statistically significant difference was detected only in the area of communication in the Home in the castle in Rokytnice. Conclusion: The research shows that neither the quality of life nor the satisfaction of the elderly in old people´s homes are significantly different. Since the respondents indicated rather lower quality of life, it is necessary to dwell on the problem and continue to monitor the factors which affect the quality of life in old people´s homes.
