Core shamanism as a part of New Age movement? Ethnographic study of core shamanism and its comparison with New Age movement.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is reflecting the tradition of core shamanism in Brno and Bratislava with help of the chosen samples of informants (amateurs and professional neoshamans). The inductive method leads to linking research problems in a broader context by comparing trainees of core shamanism with definition of the members of the New Age movement. The research questions were compiled on knowledge of theoretical concepts of the New Age movement, individualized religiosity and core shamanism. During the field work, I used ethnographic methods such as depth and a short interview, participant observation and autoethnography. Results of the analysis showed that the reasons for the practice of core shamanism are based on the needs of self-development and treatment. Amateurs, unlike professional neoshamans, showed spasmodic character of practicing core shamanism. All informants agreed that core shamanism is not a religion, but rather a way of knowledge. Professional neoshamans were convinced of the reality of shamanic worlds in which they operate their routes. However, most of the amateurs were not sure or did not believe in the existence of these worlds. Although trainees of core shamanism showed some signs that are attributed to the members of the New Age movement (the spiritual mosaic, the focus on the individual and his needs), it is not possible to identify core shamanism as a part of the New Age movement. In the process of comparing it did not occur in compliance with the essential points of several trainees (especially the amateurs), i.e. sacralization of self and signs of the environmental movement, and there have been positive attitudes about connectivity of core shamanism to Christianity.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej tézy je reflektovanie tradície jadrového šamanizmu v mestách Brno a Bratislava pomocou vybranej vzorky informátorov (laici a neošamanky). Induktívnym spôsobom dochádza k prepojeniu skúmanej problematiky do širšieho kontextu pomocou porovnávania praktikantov jadrového šamanizmu s definovaním členov hnutia New Age. Výskumné otázky boli zostavené na poznatkoch vychádzajúcich z teoretických konceptov o hnutí New Age, individualizovanej religiozite a jadrovom šamanizme. Počas terénnej práce som využívala etnografické metódy, ako je hĺbkový a krátky rozhovor, zúčastnené pozorovanie a autoetnografia. Výsledky analýzy preukázali, že dôvodmi pre praktikovanie jadrového šamanizmu vychádzajú z potrieb sebarozvoja a liečenia. Laici, na rozdiel od neošamaniek, vykazovali nárazový charakter praktikovania jadrového šamanizmu. V otázke predstáv o jadrovom šamanizmu sa všetci informátori zhodli, že jadrový šamanizmus nie je náboženstvo, ale skôr cesta poznania. Neošamanky boli presvedčené o reálnej existencii šamanských svetov, do ktorých podnikajú svoje cesty. Avšak väčšina laikov si nebola istá, alebo neverila v existencii týchto svetov. Hoci praktikanti jadrového šamanizmu vykazovali niektoré znaky, ktoré sú pripisované aj členom hnutia New Age (skladajú si spirituálnu mozaiku, kladie sa dôraz na jednotlivca a jeho potreby), nie je možné jadrový šamanizmus označiť za hnutie New Age. V procese porovnávania nenastal súlad v zásadných bodoch u viacerých praktikantoch (najmä laikov), tj. nevykazovali sakralizáciu Ja a znaky ekologického hnutia, a tiež sa vyskytli pozitívne postoje o prepojenosti jadrového šamanizmu s kresťanstvom.
