The Tributary System and the Peace-keeping Strategies of Early Ming Emperors

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá nástroje diplomatického, ekonomického a vojenského charakteru v Tributárním systému a analyzuje jejich účinnost v ovlivňování, usmíření či potrestání dvou vybraných politických aktérů, Vietnamu a Mongolska, v jejich vztazích s ranou říší Ming (1368-1644). Práce se také zaměřuje na ideologické základy Tributárního systému, které jsou popsány s cílem pochopit, jak se očekávalo fungování mezinárodních vztahů v ranní moderní Asii. Výzkumná strategie, jejímž cílem je identifikovat nástroje používané císaři Ming, zahrnuje chronologický popis událostí v čínsko-vietnamských a čínsko-mongolských vztazích a zabývá se motivací a agendou každého aktéra. Následně identifikuje a posuzuje účinnost těchto nástrojů. Jejich finální srovnání poukazuje na to, jak se jejich účinnost lišila v různých politických kontextech, zejména v Mingových přístupech a výsledky nástrojů ve vztazích s Vietnamem a Mongolskem.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the instruments found in the Tributary system, of diplomatic, economic, and military nature, and analyses their effectiveness in influencing, placating, or otherwise punishing two selected political actors, Vietnam and Mongolia, in their relations with the early Ming empire (1368-1644). The thesis also delves into the ideological underpinnings of the Tributary system, which are described to understand how international relations in early modern Asia were expected to function. The research strategy, which aims to identify the instruments utilised by Ming emperors, involves a chronological description of the events in Sino-Vietnamese and Sino-Mongol relations and addresses the motivations and agendas of each actor and subsequently identifies and judges the instruments' effectiveness. Comparisons between the two cases shed light on how the outcomes varied within different political contexts. Notably, the Ming’s approaches and the effectiveness of these instruments differ significantly in their relations with Vietnam and Mongolia.
