Blood differential and number of blood elements in endurance athletes after exercise

Abstract:

Krevní diferenciál určuje počet a procentuální zastoupení jednotlivých typů bílých krvinek a používá se v lékařství k diagnostice řady onemocnění. Změny v počtu leukocytů, jejich jednotlivých typů a dalších krevních elementů u sportovců po velké fyzické zátěži může signalizovat množství úsilí daného sportovce a jeho tréninkovou i zdravotní situaci. Cílem této bakalářské práce je sledování změny krevního obrazu u vytrvalostních sportovců – běžců po zátěži. Teoretická část této práce popisuje krevní obraz sestávající se z krevních elementů, jako jsou červené krvinky, krevní destičky, hematokrit, hemoglobin a dále pak bílé krvinky a jejich jednotlivé typy, jimiž jsou neutrofily, lymfocyty, monocyty, eozinofily a bazofily. V praktické části se práce zaměřuje na zjišťování krevního diferenciálu běžců, což znamená počítání jednotlivých druhů bílých krvinek z krevního roztěru. Současně jsou sledovány také změny dalších krevních elementů, a to erytrocytů, hemoglobinu, hematokritu a trombocytů. K pozorování a statistickému zpracování počtu krevních elementů byly použity vzorky krve závodníků Moravského ultramaratonu 2022. Rozdíly v počtech krevních elementů se hodnotí před a po uběhnutí celého závodu, dále ve vybraných dnech sedmidenního závodu, a nakonec byly zjištěné hodnoty porovnány s referenčními hodnotami. Dalším běžcům na tomto nejtěžším etapovém závodě v ČR bude pak prezentován výsledek s upozorněním na možné neblahé důsledky této zátěže.

Abstract:

A blood differential determines the count and percentage of different types of white blood cells and is used in medicine to diagnose a variety of diseases. Changes in the count of leukocytes, their individual types, and other blood elements in athletes after intense exercise may indicate the amount of effort exerted by the athlete and their training and health condition. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to monitor changes in the blood profile of endurance athletes – runners after endurance exercise. The theoretical part of this thesis describes the blood profile consisting of blood elements such as red blood cells, platelets, hematocrit, hemoglobin, white blood cells and their types, including neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. The practical part focuses on determining the blood differential of runners, which means counting the different types of white blood cells from a blood smear. Changes in other blood elements such as erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets are also monitored. The blood samples used for observation and statistical analysis of the count of blood elements come from participants of the Moravian Ultramarathon 2022. Differences in the counts of blood elements are evaluated before and after completing the entire race, during selected days of the seven-day race, and the findings are compared with reference values. The results will be presented to other runners in this toughest stage race in the Czech Republic with a warning about possible adverse effects of this exertion.
