The Fantasy Genre in Russian Literature

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the fantasy genre. Its aim is describing the genre, and above all distinguishing it from sci-fi. Further we aim to introduce the founders of the genre and its origins in Russian literature. There are also mentioned significant features of fantasy literature. Nevertheless we mainly try to emphasize comparison of these features in works of art of Russian and western fantasy writers. Throughout the thesis we focus on three contemporary Russian fantasy writers - Alexej Pechov, Julia Bautina and Sergej Roscin. Firstly we briefly describe their fantasy worlds, then poetics of particular characters is shown, where we compare descriptions, functions and qualities of the main literary characters, anti-heroes, particular fantasy races, fantasy creatures. We also touch the problem of magic and sorcery. The thesis results in comparison of Russian and western fantasy literature, respectively of the myths and legends that are often sources of inspiration for these authors. Having compared individual works of different authors, we found out that Russian writers take great deal of inspiration from the western literature as far as the fantasy features are concerned. However we never see a completely same thing as Russian writers change the features in their own specific way. Sometimes the change is so significant that the only thing connecting the original feature with its picture in Russian literature, is just the name. At the same time, in Russian context we often meet topics from Slavonic mythology. To sum up the complex of the thesis, we state that Russian fantasy writers are being strongly influenced by western fantasy literature. Despite this fact they manage to be very original and they succeeded in creating typically Russian fantasy literature.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje žánru fantasy. Jejím cílem je popsat tento žánr, především jej odlišit od žánru sci-fi. Dále si tato práce klade za cíl představit čtenáři zakladatele tohoto žánru a také jeho počátky v ruské literatuře. Rovněž jsem se zaměřila na charakteristiku jednotlivých elementů fantasy literatury. Největší důraz je však kladen na srovnání těchto prvků v dílech ruských a západních spisovatelů žánru fantasy. V rámci této diplomové práce se věnuji tvorbě tří ruských současných spisovatelů fantasy literatury, jsou to: Alexej Pechov, Julia Bautina a Sergej Roščin. Nejdříve je u každého autora uveden stručný popis jeho fantastického světa. Dále se věnuji poetice jednotlivých postav, kdy srovnávám popisy, funkce a vlastnosti hlavních hrdinů, záporných postav, jednotlivých fantastických ras, fantastických stvoření a také se dotýkám problematiky magie. Výsledkem této práce je tedy srovnání ruské fantasy literatury se západní fantasy literaturou, případně s mýty a legendami, ze kterých tito autoři také velice často čerpají. Poté, co jsem porovnala jednotlivá díla různých autorů, jsem zjistila, že ruští autoři přebírají velké množství fantastických prvků se západní fantasy literatury, ovšem nikdy ne v podobě s jakou se s daným prvkem setkáváme u těchto západních autorů. Ruští spisovatelé si dané prvky přetvoří k obrazu svému. Občas je tato změna natolik významná, že s původním prvkem, má ten nový, ruský element společný pouze název. V ruské fantastické tvorbě se také častěji setkáváme s náměty ze slovanské mytologie. Pokud bych měla shrnout celkový výsledek této práce, tak by zněl asi takto: ruští autoři žánru fantasy, jsou velice silně ovlivňování západní fantastickou literaturou, ale i přesto jsou velmi originální a dokázali vytvořit typickou ruskou fantasy literaturu.
