The Aesthetic Principles of the French Formal Garden

Abstract:

Disertační práce Estetické principy francouzské formální zahrady analyzuje tři významné prameny teorie zahradní architektury ze sedmnáctého a osmnáctého století. Cílem práce je nalézt v těchto textech relevantní pasáže, které potvrzují působení klasických estetických principů ve francouzské formální zahradě. Tyto principy dělí na ty, které se projevují přímo ve tvorbě francouzských formálních zahrad (kompozice, perspektiva, proporce, symetrie, rozmanitost, harmonie a unitas multiplex), a na principy, které odrážejí vztah teorie a estetické povahy zahrady (vhodnost, užitečnost, rozum, příroda a krása).

Abstract:

The dissertation The Aesthetic Principles of the French Formal Garden analyzes three key sources of the garden design theory dated to the seventeenth and the eighteenth century. The aim is to identify sections and find relevant quotes confirming the influence of classic aesthetic principles in the French formal garden. These principles can be broken down to two groups. First group specifies the aesthetic principles of creation of French formal garden (composition, perspective, proportion, symmetry, variety, harmony and unitas multiplex). Second deals with the aesthetic principles concerning the theory of French formal garden (convenience, utility, reason, nature and beauty).
