Traditional Mountain Transport in the Krkonoše, the Šumava, the Western Beskydy and the Javorníky Areas

Abstract:

Tradiční horský transport představuje důležitou součást materiální i duchovní lidové kultury a některé jeho formy se na českém území zachovaly v různých podobách až do současnosti. Jestliže se etnologické vědě podařilo na českém území zdokumentovat lidové stavitelství, oděv nebo lidovou stravu, o dopravě to nelze s výjimkou vodního transportu říct. Pouze vodní transport se stal v polovině 20. století námětem systematického odborného výzkumu, což souviselo především s budováním vodních děl na Vltavě a zaplavením řady bývalých plaveckých vesnic. K ostatním formám tradiční dopravy na českém území se věnují někteří etnografové nebo regionální badatelé převážně v dílčích článcích. Tuto mezeru se snaží text dizertační práce částečně zaplnit. Dizertační práce sleduje vývoj bádání v tomto odvětví etnologie, obsahuje základní přehled a systematizaci tradičních způsobů dopravy, a tím i souvisejících dopravních prostředků. Také poukazuje na vybrané terminologické problémy. Dále se věnuje formám tradičního transportu materiálu na území čtyř horských pohoří – Krkonoš, Šumavy, Západních Beskyd a Javorníků. Vznik fenoménu tradičního horského transportu souvisí s osídlením horských regionů a postupným rozvojem hospodářské činnosti. Podoba a konkrétní způsoby tradiční dopravy materiálů v jednotlivých pohořích se však liší na základě rozdílného kulturněhistorického kontextu. V rámci sledovaných pohoří dizertační práce v obecnější rovině definuje a komparuje, jaké prostředky se v tradičním prostředí k transportu uplatňovaly. Poukazuje na jejich životnost, způsob používání, funkčnost a v rámci toho si všímá i lidského fenoménu. S tradiční dopravou v horském prostředí totiž úzce souvisí profesní skupiny – například povolání dřevaře, kočího, profesionálního nosiče nebo koláře.

Abstract:

Traditional mountain transport is an important part of both the material and spiritual folk culture. Its certain forms have been preserved in various forms in the Czech Republic up to the present. Unlike the folk architecture, clothing or catering, the ethnological science has not been able to comprehensively document the traditional fork transport in the Czech territory, except for the water transport, which became the subject of systematic expert research in the mid-20th century, mainly in connection with the construction of waterworks on the Vltava River and with flooding of numerous villages formerly involved in timber rafting. Other forms of the traditional transport at the Czech territory have been dealt with by some ethnographers or regional researchers, mainly in their articles focused on particular phenomena. The thesis aims at partially filling this gap by mapping the development of the research work in this branch of ethnology. The thesis includes basic overview and systematization of the traditional modes of transport and the means of transport related thereto. It also refers to certain issues of terminology. Besides that, the thesis analyses the forms of the traditional transport of goods and material in the territory of four mountain ranges – the Krkonoše, the Šumava, the Western Beskydy and the Javorníky. The phenomenon of traditional mountain transport emerged in connection with settlement of the mountainous regions and gradual development of the local economic activity. However, the form and specific ways of the traditional transport of goods and materials differ in the individual mountain areas incident to different cultural-historical context. The thesis defines and compares in a general way what means were used for transport in the traditional environment of the monitored mountain areas, refers to the lifetime, way of use and functionality thereof, and observes the human factor related thereto, since there were many professional groups closely related to the traditional mountain transport, such as the profession of woodcutter, timber merchant, coachman, professional porter or wheeler.
