A Comparative Analysis of English and Czech Idioms

Abstract:

Hlavním záměrem této práce je porovnávání idiomů a idiomatických výrazů z Anglického a Českého jazyka. V první řadě se teoretická část zabývala pojmy idiom a idiomatický výraz a nabídla příklady jejich definic. Ve druhé části byla prozkoumána problematika překladů idiomu do jiného jazyka a typologie idiomatických ekvivalentů. Součástí bylo také zaměření se na interpretaci idiomů. Analytická část se zabývala porovnáním seznamu anglických idiomů obsahující části těla, podrobněji části hlavy, s českými výrazy. Hlavním záměr bylo nalezení ekvivalentních idiomatických výrazů v cílovém jazyce a označení, zda se jedná o identický, podobný nebo odlišný ekvivalent. Identifikace typu ekvivalentu byla založena na typologii popsané v teoretické části. Typy mají označení absolutní, relativní a neidiomatický ekvivalent. Konečné výsledky ukázali, že mezi anglickými a českými idiomy je hlavně relativní ekvivalence, což znamená že mezi anglickými a českými ideami je hlavně sémantické spojení bez strukturální podobnosti. To může vést k závěru, že anglické idiomy by neměly být doslovně překládány do češtiny. Proces překladu by měl být založený na jejich významu.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to provide a comparative study of idioms and idiomatic expressions in the English and Czech languages. Firstly, the theoretical part examines the terms idiom and idiomatic expression and gives examples of their definitions. In the second part, we investigate the topic of translating idioms into another language and the typology of idiomatic equivalents. Part of it also focuses on the interpretation of idioms. The analytical part aimed to compare a list of English idioms consisting of body parts, more specifically parts of the head, with Czech expressions. The main focus was to find an equal idiomatic expression in the target language and to identify whether the equivalent is identical, similar, or different. The identification of the types of equivalents is based on the typology described in the theoretical part. The types are called absolute, relative, and non-idiomatic equivalent. The final results show that between English and Czech idioms there is mainly a relative equivalence, which means that between English and Czech idioms there is primarily a semantic connection without similarity in structure. This could lead to the conclusion that English idioms should not be translated literally into Czech. The translation process should be based on their meaning.
