Postcolonial Statehood: Case Study of Uganda

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je definovat postkoloniální státnost dle konceptu Georga Sorensena a analýzou ugandské státnosti dokázat, že je Uganda ideálním typem státu pro tento koncept. Práce vysvětluje příčiny vzniku nového státního aktéra v mezinárodním prostoru a zařazuje jej v něm. Poté definuje postkoloniální státnost dle Sorensenova konceptu. Dále analyzuje postkoloniální státnost Ugandy od získání nezávislosti na Velké Británii roku 1962 do poloviny 90. let, s přihlédnutím ke koloniálnímu dědictví. Sorensenův koncept vysvětluje tři prvky státnosti, dle kterých lze identifikovat postkoloniální stát. Těmito prvky jsou, ve zkratce: vláda jako uchvácená autonomie, nefunkční ekonomika, závislá na světovém trhu, a slabá nebo neexistující národní jednota. Analýzou ugandské státnosti ve vymezeném období dokážeme, že všemi těmito prvky v průběhu svého vývoje disponovala a je tedy ideálním typem státu pro Sorensenův koncept.

Abstract:

The purpose of the bachelor thesis is to define postcolonial statehood on the basis of George Sorensen's concept and to prove by the means of an analysis of the Ugandan statehood, that Uganda is the ideal type of state for this concept. The thesis explains the causes of appearance of the new state actor in the international space and classifies it in it. Then it defines postcolonial statehood according to Sorensen's concept. Further it analyzes the postcolonial statehood of Uganda, from reaching independence from Great Britain in 1962 to the middle of 1990's, taking into consideration the colonial heritage. The Sorensen's concept consists of three components of the statehood by which a postcolonial state can be identified. These components are, shortly: the government as a captivated autonomy, a non-functioning economy, dependent on the world market, and a week or non-existing national unity. The thesis proves by analyzing the Ugandan statehood in the detached period, that it possessed all the above mentioned components during its development, and that is why it is the ideal type of state for Sorensen's concept.
