Abstract:

Tato dizertační práce se zabývá měřením a separací neutronového a gama záření. Reakce, které vytvářejí pole neutronového záření a rovněž reakce neutronů s okolním prostředím, generují také záření gama. Často je potřeba měřit neutronové záření v tomto směsném poli neutronů a gama. Některé typy scintilátorů dokáží účinně separovat neutrony a gama fotony; tvar scintilačního impulzu vytvořeného těmito částicemi je rozdílný. Rozdíl těchto impulzů je způsoben rozdílným zpožděním deexcitace po interakci částice ve scintilátoru. Výsledný tvar pulzu je pak tvořen rychlou a pomalou složkou scintilace. A právě pomalá složka scintilace může odhalit typ částice, který ji vytvořil. Tento poznatek je využíván k separování různých typů částic a metody, které jej využívají, nazýváme pulse shape discrimination (PSD) metody. Tato práce představuje množství nových metod sloužících k separaci neutronových a gama impulzů. Pro posouzení vlivu bitového rozlišení a rychlosti vzorkování impulzů byly pro získání analyzovaných impulzů použity dva rozdílné digitizéry. Některé metody hledají rozdíl v průběhu impulzu, případně v jeho amplitudě, a proto vyžadují data v časové doméně. Jiné metody využívají matematické funkce či techniky z digitálního zpracování signálů jako Fourierova transformace nebo filtrování. Všechny tyto metody byly aplikovány na několik sad impulzů získaných ze stilbenového scintilátoru a byla porovnána jejich separační síla. Většina prezentovaných metod je robustních, tj. dávají dobré výsledky i při nízkém bitovém rozlišení nebo nízké vzorkovací rychlosti impulzů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the measurement and discrimination of neutron and gamma-ray radiations. The primary reaction producing neutron field and scattering reactions of neutrons with materials in the environment lead to the production of gamma-ray as a background radiation. It is often necessary to measure neutron radiation in mixed fields of high gamma-ray intensity. Certain scintillators could effectively discriminate between neutron and gamma radiation; their scintillation pulse shapes for these two radiations are different from each other. The differing pulse shapes of neutrons and gamma-rays is the result of different de-excitation delays in the scintillator when these particles strike it. A composite pulse curve often comprises a fast and a slow component of scintillation. The long-lived slow component often reveals the nature of the particle striking the detector. This fact is usually used to separate different kinds of particles; this process is called pulse shape discrimination (PSD). PSD techniques are mainly used to discriminate neutrons from the gamma-rays. The digital measurement and discrimination of neutrons and gamma-rays in a mixed radiation field are carried out through various novel methods in this thesis. The radiation pulses are obtained with two differently-featured digitizers to find out the effects of data resolution and sampling rate on each method discussed. Some approaches require time-domain based data, exploiting the difference between neutrons and gamma-rays in their timing, or in amplitude, or both. Several other approaches use mathematical functions or digital signal processing techniques including Fourier transform or filtering to separate the radiations. All these methods are applied to several sets of mixed neutron and gamma signals obtained with a stilbene scintillator and their discrimination qualities are compared. Most of the introduced methods are robust, i.e. they provide promising results when applied to the data recorded at either low or high resolutions, or sampled at low or high rates.
