Organization of Young Parents Family Life, Considering Men’s and Women’s Roles, Gender Norms and Consequences

Abstract:

Touto prací jsem se snažil získat hlubší vhled do organizace rodinného života mladých rodičů, se zřetelem k probíhajícím proměnám rodových (gender) rolí ve společnosti. Zaměřil jsem se na to, jak si muži a ženy rozdělují jednotlivé činnosti v rodinách s malými dětmi, podíly na odpovědnosti za rozhodování v jednotlivých oblastech vztahu, a jak při plnění rodinných úkolů spolupracují. Také mě zajímalo, jaké normy, vztahující se k mužským a ženským rolím, na mladé rodiče při své organizaci rodinného života působí a jaké důsledky toto uspořádání rodiny pro ně má. Problém jsem řešil na vzorku deseti párů kombinací kvalitativních a dotazníkových metod. Důraz byl kladen na rozhovory pořízené v domácnostech partnerů a na analýze jejich interakcí. Pro zjišťování rodových norem jsem použil dotazník navržený D. Kusou v úpravě K. Zábrodské a M. Blatného. Dalšími metodami byly Škála rodinného prostředí, Dotazník životní spokojenosti a Test inkonzistence rolí. Zjistil jsem, že v rozdělení domácích prací párů dominovalo tradiční uspořádání komplementárních rolí. Soudě podle sdílení odpovědnosti za rozhodování ve společných aspektech vztahu, se páry zase přikláněly k egalitářskému (partnerskému) uspořádání. Ačkoli takto nastavená pravidla vztahu patrně méně vyhovovala ženám, přesto to byly ony, které kladly překážky jejich větší zástupnosti partnery. Pro ženy byly největší psychickou zátěží podmínky všednodennosti a častá únava z náročné péče o malé děti a domácnost. Na muže nejvíce působil psychický tlak nutnosti zabezpečit rodinu. Partneři vnímají rodové vlastnosti mužů a žen tradičním způsobem. Sami by však rádi měli vlastnosti méně rodově diferencované, ve kterých mírně dominují maskulinní adjektiva znázorňující tendence k individualismu. Do sebepojetí mužů se promítla jejich aktuální zkušenost s otcovstvím. K sebepopisu použili značnou část feminních adjektiv. Výsledky jsou na závěr diskutovány.

Abstract:

In my thesis I have tried to get a deeper insight into the organization of family life of young parents, considering the changing of gender roles in our society. I focus on the way men and women living in families with small children divide different activities, how they share the responsibility for making decisions in various relationship issues, and how they cooperate in fulfilling family tasks. I am also interested in gender norms which affect young parents in their family organization. Further more, I look for the consequences a specific organization of family life has for men and women. My research sample consists of ten couples. I used a combination of qualitative and questionnaire methods. I put my emphasis on interviews held in the couples‘ homes and the analysis of their interaction. To investigate gender norms I use the questionnaire designed by D. Kusa and adapted by K. Zabrodska and M. Blatny. Other methods include the Family Environment Scale, the Questionnaire of Life Satisfaction and the Questionnaire of Roles Inconsistence. I have found that it is the traditional division of complementary roles which dominates in the couple’s division of chores. Concerning the sharing of responsibility for decision making in various relationship issues the couples on the other hand tend to accept the egalitarian organization of family life. Although this arrangement evidently satisfies women less then men, it was them, who set obstacles to more flexibility in fulfilling family roles. The primary reason for the women’s stress was the everyday routine with frequent exhaustion caused by the hard work with small children and household. Men, on the other hand, were under pressure cause by the need to ensure financial security for the family. Partners perceive gender aspects of men and women in the traditional way. Nevertheless they would prefer to be less gender-specific with slightly prevailing masculine adjectives linked to values of individualism. Men's self perception is influenced by their experience with fatherhood. To describe themselves they used a lot of feminine adjectives. The results are discussed in the conclussion.
