Crowdfunding as an alternative way of raising funds for NGOs

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto diplomovej práce je určiť faktory, ktoré ovplyvňujú nadfinacovanie kampane a zistiť, či tieto faktory sú konzistentné medzi rôznymi tvorcami projektu, konkrétne medzi NNO a inými entitami. K tejto analýze boli použité dáta 617 projektov, ktoré zbierali finančné prostriedky na českej crowdfundingovej platforme Hithit a ktoré boli rozdelené do kategórii podľa statusu tvorca projektu. Analýza bola vykonaná na vzorke všetkých dát a vzorke, ktorá obsahovala dáta projektov vytvorenými iba NNO, aby bolo možné porovnať rozdiely. Z výsledkov možno indikovať, že projekty vytvorené NNO majú sklon k nižšiemu nadfinancovaniu ako projekty vytvorené inými entitami. Za predpokladanú príčinu je považovaná buď zaujímavejšia náplň projektu alebo ponúkané odmeny, ktoré, v prípade inej entity tvorca projektu, majú skôr formu predpredaja produktu než symbolickej odmeny. Tie sú typickejšie pre projekty vytvorené NNO. Okrem niektorých špecifických faktorov, vplyvy skúmaných faktorov sú konzistentné naprieč všetkými vzorkami.

Abstract:

The purpose of this diploma thesis is to determine the factors that affect the level of a campaign’s overfunding rate and whether these factors are consistent between different forms of project creators; more specifically, between the NGOs and other entities. In order to do so, data from 617 projects was collated from the Czech crowdfunding platform Hithit and categorised according to the status of the project creator. The estimation was executed on an overall sample and a sample of purely NGO projects in order to observe if the outcomes differ. The estimation of the overall sample indicates that NGOs tend to raise fewer additional funds than other forms of project creators. The assumed reason may be found either in a more attractive project goal or in the offered rewards, which, in the case of the other form of project creators, can take the form of pre-sale product, rather than a symbolic form, which is more common in NGO projects. With the exception of certain specific factors, the effects of the examined factors were consistent across all samples.
