Deep Blue and after: Human-machine relations viewed through the lens of chess

Abstract:

Vydání ChatGPT vyvolalo v roce 2022 veřejnou kontroverzi, která nám připomněla, jak důležité je porozumět roli, jakou umělá inteligence hraje v naší společnosti. Tato práce zkoumá vztahy mezi lidmi a stroji optikou šachové hry. Jednak se vrací k zápasu mezi Garrym Kasparovem a superpočítačem Deep Blue z roku 1997, jednak sleduje, jak se šachisté vyrovnávali se vstupem šachových programů do své komunity. V analýze jsem se řídil interpretativní metodologií. Konkrétně jsem šel ve stopách silného programu v kulturní sociologii a také jsem využil Reedův koncept krajiny významů a jeho teorii rektorů a aktérů. Kromě analýzy diskurzu jsem se pokusil přihlédnout k materiální, relační a performativní stránce sociální reality. Zmíněné koncepty jsem aplikoval na širokou škálu dat, načež jsem identifikoval a interpretoval několik typů uspořádání vztahů mezi člověkem a strojem, v nichž může stroj zastávat roli nepřítele, splývat s člověkem nebo být využit jako nástroj. První uspořádání se týká především superpočítače Deep Blue. Moje analýza jde proti tendenci vidět zpětně tento počítač jako odkouzlený a předkládá opačný obraz, který je relevantní i pro dnešní debatu o umělé inteligenci. Zbylá dvě uspořádání ukazují, jak byly související kulturní významy uspořádány poté, co se počítače staly neporazitelnými. Má práce prezentuje šachové prostředí jako užitečný kontext pro porozumění těmto jevům.

Abstract:

In 2022, the release of ChatGPT sparked public controversy, making it very important to understand the role of artificial intelligence in our society. This thesis explores human-machine relations through the lens of chess, revisiting the 1997 match between former world champion Garry Kasparov and the supercomputer Deep Blue while showing how chess players have been dealing with the introduction of chess engines into their community. My analysis employs an interpretive methodology. I followed the strong program in cultural sociology and Reed’s conception of landscape of meanings as well as his rector-actor theory, trying to accompany the discourse analysis by a discussion of materiality, relationality, and performativity. By applying these tools to a wide range of existing data, I came up with and interpreted several human-machine relational arrangements, specifically machine as an enemy, as fused with human, and as a tool. The former concerns especially Deep Blue. Although this supercomputer tends to be presented as disenchanted in retrospect, my analysis looks through hindsight bias, pointing to the opposite instances that are relevant for the current debate. The latter arrangements show how the associated meanings were renegotiated after machines had become invincible. My thesis presents chess as a productive context for understanding these phenomena.
