Origin of English and Czech Surnames: Similarities and Differences

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o anglických a českých příjmeních, jejich původu a vývoji v různých společenských vrstvách do doby, než se stabilizovala, a dále o jejich zařazení do různých kategorií. Každá kategorie je představena s konkrétními příklady příjmení, a kde to bylo možné zjistit, jsou také poskytnuty informace o jejich možném původu. Výše uvedené sloužilo jako základ pro zjištění, zda byl vývoj příjmení v obou zemích obdobný, zda v obou jazycích existují stejné kategorie příjmení, zda lze v obou jazycích najít dokonce i identická příjmení, a zda motivace, která vedla k jejich vytvoření, byla víceméně totožná nebo zcela odlišná.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with English and Czech surnames: their origin and development across various echelons of the society until they became stabilized, as well as with their typolo-gy. Each category of surnames is presented with concrete examples and, where it was possible to ascertain, also the information about their likely origin is provided. This served as a basis for determination whether the development of surnames was similar in both countries, whether the same surname categories exist in both languages, whether also identical surnames can be found in both languages, and whether the motivation that led to their creation was more or less the same or entirely different.
