Economic and Energy Determinants of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Turkey from 2000 to 2022

Abstract:

Understanding and analyzing the effect of greenhouse gas emissions is important, considering it is one of the main causes of climate change. This study examined the changes in Turkey’s greenhouse gas emissions between 2000 and 2022. In addition, the economic and energy determinants of Turkey's greenhouse gas emissions between 2000-2022 were searched into to understand their effects and relationships with greenhouse gas emissions. Using time series analysis and linear regression model, change in greenhouse gas emissions (M ton CO2) as the dependent variable, change in GDP per capita (current USD), changes in energy consumption (TJ), and change in fossil fuel share of electricity generation (%) as independent variables are analyzed. The findings of the study suggested that some policies should be implemented or improved to ensure sustainable economic growth, considering Turkey's dependence on fossil resources.
