Endocrine Disruptors and Their Influence on Fertility

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis studies a range of endocrine disruptors and tries to summarise their impact on fertility based on scientific articles. In the long term horizon, human fertility is getting worse. This may be caused by genetic predisposition, but also by endocrine disruptors. Endocrine disruptors are omnipresent chemicals, which can be detected in plastics, cans, cosmetics, furniture or even in tooth fillings. People may be exposed to them through food, water, air or skin contact. This study gives an overview of these chemical agents, their legal regulation and their impact on fertility at the level of gametogenesis and organogenesis. Male fertility is affected mainly by the decline of sperm concentration, induction of testicular cancer or prostatic hyperplasia. In females, the effect on fertility consists mainly of defects in spindle formation in the first and second meiotic division, irregular menstrual cycle or endometriosis. In conclusion, even if some of the endocrine disruptors are under legal regulation, they can still be detected in the environment. The substances meant as a replacement for these disruptors are unfortunate because they also show the endocrine disruptive effect.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto bakalárskej práce je vypracovať literárny prehľad o látkach s endokrinne disruptívnym efektom a na základe vedeckých článkov popísať ich dopad na plodnosť. V dlhodobom horizonte sledujeme postupné zhoršovanie ľudskej plodnosti, pričom okrem genetických predispozícií na to pravdepodobne vplývajú aj endokrinné disruptory. Endokrinné disruptory sú všadeprítomné, nachádzajú sa v plastoch, konzervách, kozmetike, nábytku, dokonca aj v zubných plombách. Do tela sa dostávajú s jedlom, vodou, vzduchom či skrz pokožku. Táto práca poskytuje prehľad látok s endokrinne disruptívnym účinkom, ich právnej regulácie a ich účinky na plodnosť na úrovni gametogenézy a organogenézy. Samčia plodnosť je postihovaná najmä znižovaním množstva spermií či indukciou rakoviny semenníkov alebo hyperplázie prostaty. V rámci samičej plodnosti sú to najmä defekty deliaceho vretienka v prvom i druhom meiotickom delení, nepravidelný menštruačný cyklus či endometrióza. Záverom je, že síce niektoré látky sú právne regulované, ich detekcia v prostredí je stále aktuálna a náhrada týchto látok je viac ako poľutovaniahodná, pretože aj u nich sa preukazuje endokrinne disruptívny efekt.
