Multilingualism in Teaching German as Third Language

Abstract:

V této disertační práci jsme se zaměřili na rozvoj mnohojazyčnosti ve výuce německého jazyka jako druhého cizího jazyka po angličtině. V teoretické části jsme představili koncepci mnohojazyčnosti a pojetí jazyků ve vztahu k mnohojazyčnosti. Pro účel této práce jsme zůstali u chápání mnohojazyčnosti jako schopnosti na různých úrovních ovládat a osvojovat si tři a více jazyky v jejich vzájemné propojenosti. Dále jsme naznačili, že v této práci budeme chápat jazyk per se jako komunikační zdroj (Lüdi & Py, 2009). V kapitole věnované stavu poznání zkoumané problematiky jsme uvedli studie, které tematicky a metodologicky korespondují s naším výzkumem a které jsou uvedeny v databázi Web of Science a dále i vybrané tematicky a metodologicky relevantní výzkumné studie. Dále jsme popsali výzkumné otázky. Jako hlavní výzkumná otázka byla stanovena: „Jak jsou organizovány situace ve výuce, kterých ve kterých je patrný vliv prvního cizího jazyka (angličtina jako L2) na výuku druhého cizího jazyka (němčina jako L3)?“. Následně byl charakterizován výzkumný soubor, jež čítal videonahrávky 28 vyučovacích hodin německého jazyka (včetně jejich transkriptů), pořízených v rámci projektu IVŠV videostudie. Byla uvedena metoda výzkumu – konverzační analýza – a její teoretická východiska a nadále jsme i charakterizovali jednotku analýzy – výukovou situaci. Představili jsme také vlastní metodologický postup, v jehož rámci jsme identifikovali situace, ve kterých je patrný vliv anglického jazyka a popsali průběh analýzy výukových situací. Ve výsledkové části předkládaného textu byly prezentovány výsledky analýz. Z hlediska strukturu situací, ve kterých je patrný vliv anglický jazyk ve výuce německého jazyk, je parné, že mají nejčastěji strukturu IRF (iniciace – odpověď – zpětná vazba) v různých modifikacích. Z analýzy také vyplývá, že anglický jazyk do výuky německého jazyka vstupoval v podobě žákovských odpovědí, učitelských komentářů a nápověd. Pokud vnese anglický jazyk žák, nejčastější reakcí učitele se ukázala být oprava, která nabývala různých podob. Jedná se o opravy iniciované a provedené učitelem (ve smyslu other-initiated other repair), sebeopravy iniciované učitelem (ve smyslu other-initiated self-reapir), a sebeopravy iniciované samotným žákem (ve smyslu self-initiated self-repair). Dále byl anglický jazyk patrný v komentářích učitele, které často rozvíjí zpětnou vazbu a slouží jako výklad a v jejich rámci je podporována metalingvistická znalost jazyků. Nápovědy, ve kterých je patrný anglický jazyk, byly užity jako reakce na problém resp. na chybu (která ale nesouvisela s anglickým jazykem). V takových nápovědách byly užita metalingvistická vodítka, které mají žákovi usnadnit sebeopravu. Výsledky byly dále diskutovány s ohledem na oborově didaktické zaměření práce. Z výsledů usuzujeme, že u zkoumaných učitelů nebyla v naprosté většině patrná podpora mnohojazyčnosti jako dílčího cíle výuky. Z našich analýz také vyplývá, že anglický jazyk nemá v hodině jasnou pozici – v některých situacích je vnímán jako chyba, zatímco v jiných jako pomoc při učení se. Z naší práce vyplývá pro oborově didaktický výzkum, že by v budoucnu měl přinést řadu poznatků ohledně rozvoje mnohojazyčnosti ve výuce cizího jazyka – zaměřit by se měl zejména na rozvoj a ověřování didaktických přístupů rozvíjejících mnohojazyčnost.

Abstract:

In this dissertation thesis we have focussed on the development of multilingualism in teaching German as a second foreign language (after English). In the theoretical part, the concept of multilingualism and the concept of languages in relation to multilingualism were introduced. In this dissertation, we understand multilingualism as the ability to use (at various levels) and acquire three or more languages in an interconnected way; we approach language as such as a communicative resource (Ludi & Py, 2009). In the chapter describing the state of the art, studies that are related to our research on a thematic or methodological level were presented and discussed, both studies from the Web of Science database and other relevant papers. In the next chapter, the research methodology was introduced. The main research question asked how teaching situations in which the influence of the first foreign language (English as L2) on the second foreign language (German as L3) is evident are organized. The research sample consisted of 28 lessons of German as a foreign language at lower-secondary schools (including their transcripts) recorded as a part of the IRSE Video Studies. Following the introduction of the research sample, the method of analysis – conversation analysis – and its theoretical background was characterized as well as the unit of analysis, i.e. the teaching situation. Drawing on this, our research procedure was described that allowed us to identify teaching situations with an evident influence of English on German and analyse them. In the subsequent part of the thesis, the research findings were presented. As far as the structure of the identified teaching situations is concerned, it is clear that they mostly follow the IRF pattern (initiation – response – feedback) in various modifications. The analysis suggests that English language in German teaching is mostly present in pupils’ responses, teachers’ comments and clues. If it is the pupil who brings in the English language, the most common response of the teacher is a repair that can take on various forms, namely a repair initiated and done by the teacher (other-initiated other repair), a repair initiated by the teacher but done by the pupil (other-initiated self-repair) or a repair both initiated and done by the pupil (self-initiated self-repair). If the English language was present in a teacher’s comment, it usually developed the feedback or served as an explanation, in which the metalinguistic knowledge of languages was supported. Clues in which the English language was evident were usually used as a reaction to a problem or a mistake (often not connected to English language). In such cases the English language was used to provide metalinguistic clues that were meant to help the pupil with self-repair. The presented findings were further on discussed with respect to subject didactics. They suggest that in the lessons of teachers who participated in the study the support of multilingualism as a partial aim of language teaching was evident. Our analysis further hints towards the fact that English language in German lessons does not have a clear status – in some situations it is perceived as a mistake, whilst in others as a help for learning. The thesis provides impulses for subject didactics research that should focus on multilingualism in language teaching, especially on the development and evaluation of didactic approaches that support multilingualism.
