The effect of xylem structure and function of individual plant organ on the survival of elm (Ulmus laevis Pall.) plants during drought stress

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jak se liší parametry xylému a efektivita vedení vody mezi jednotlivými orgány a zároveň odlišit znaky, které by se jevily jako potenciální ukazatele vyšší náchylnosti sazenic jilmu na stres suchem. Za tímto účelem byly z každé sazenice odebrány vzorky kořenů, kmene a řapíků pro laboratorní zpracování a anatomickou analýzu, která proběhla automaticky v počítačovém programu ze snímků příčných řezů vzorků a ze zjištěných parametrů xylému se následně dopočetly hodnoty teoretické hydraulické vodivosti. Výsledky částečně prokázaly teorii postupného zmenšování cév v rámci těla rostliny, ale pouze ve směru od kmene k řapíkům, nikoli od kmene ke kořenům. Z porovnání přeživších a odumřelých sazenic nevyplývá žádný znak, který by poukazoval na možnou predikci přežití/odumření během sucha jako stresového faktoru. Na hranici statistické významnosti měly přeživší sazenice u kmene větší rozměry cév spojené s vyšší hydraulickou vodivostí (tj. efektivitou), naopak u kořenů měly menší rozměry cév a nižší efektivitu, za to ale s větší hydraulickou bezpečností.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to find out how the parameters of xylem and the efficiency of water conduction differ between individual organs and at the same time to distinguish the features that would appear as potential indicators of higher susceptibility of elm plants to drought stress. For this purpose, root, stem, and petiole samples were taken from each plant for laboratory processing and anatomical analysis, which was performed automatically in a computer program from cross-sectional images of the samples and values of the theoretical hydraulic conductivity was subsequently calculated from the detected xylem parameters. The results partially confirm the theory of the conduits tappering within the plant body, but only in the direction from the stem to the petioles, not from the stem to the roots. A comparison of surviving and dead plants does not reveal any indication of a possible prediction of survival or death during drought as a stress factor. At the point of statistical significance, the surviving plants had wider conduits associated with higher hydraulic conductivity (ie efficiency) in the stem, while in the roots they had narrower conduits and lower efficiency, but with greater hydraulic safety.
