The Construction of Main Female Characters in Sicario (2015) and Wind River (2017)

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo zjistit, jakým způsobem jsou konstruované hlavní ženské postavy ve filmech Sicario (2015) a Wind River (2017) a jaké typy kriminalistek tyto filmy podle scénářů Taylora Sheridana představují. Analýzy postav byly provedeny pomocí znaků filmové postavy představených Richardem Dyerem v knize Stars a typologie kriminalistek představené Ivetou Jansovou v článku "Zobrazování ženských hrdinek v současných kriminálních seriálech (Specifické prostředí amerických mainstreamových dramat)." Následná komparace postav odhalila nejdůležitější znaky konstrukce, a to vzhled, mizanscénu a jak postava mluví o sobě/jak o ní mluví ostatní. Upozaděným znakem se naopak ukázala být gesta. Obě postavy lze přiřadit k typům kriminalistek profesionálek, šéfek a obětí. Zvláštní pozici poté zaujal typ kriminalistka dcerou, jehož původní definice byla v tomto případě nedostatečná a nabídl se tak nový způsob, jak typ kriminalistky dcery uchopit. Na základě provedených analýz je pravděpodobné, že scénárista Taylor Sheridan dané postavy konstruoval podobným způsobem, ať už na úrovni fyzické, tak charakterové.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to find out how the main female characters in the films Sicario (2015) and Wind River (2017) are constructed and what types of female crime fighters these films, based on scripts by Taylor Sheridan, represent. The analysis of the characters was conducted using the signs of film characters presented by Richard Dyer in Stars and the typology of female crime fighters presented by Iveta Jansova in "Representation of Female Protagonists in Contemporary Crime Series (Specific Settings of American Mainstream Dramas)." The subsequent comparison revealed the most important signs of the construction, namely appearance (face and costume), mise-en-scene and how the character speaks about herself/how others speak about her. The neglected feature, on the other hand, turned out to be gestures. Both characters can be assigned to the types of professional female crime fighters, bosses and victims. A special position was then taken by the type of the female crime fighter as daughter, whose initial definition was insufficient in this case, offering a new way to grasp the type of the female cirme fighter as daughter. Based on the analyses, it is likely that screenwriter Taylor Sheridan constructed the characters in a similar manner, both on a physical and character level.
