Ustupující led v Arktidě odkrývá bohatá naleziště surovin i nové námořní trasy. Jsou zde oblasti pod mezinárodní správou, na něž si činí nárok pět států. Navíc některé z nich nemají zcela vytyčené vzájemné námořní hranice. To je důvod, proč se objevily teorie možného vzniku ozbrojeného konfliktu či nové studené války. Retreating ice in the Arctic reveals rich deposits of resources and new shipping routes as well. There are a few areas under international administration claimed by five states. Moreover, some of these states do not have clearly marked mutual maritime boundaries.
