Semantic stability of map signs

Abstract:

Jednou z mnoha vlastností, kterým se lze u kartografických znaků věnovat (jakožto i u znaků obecně), je jejich sémantická stabilita. Vliv sémantické stability znaku na úspěšnost jeho intepretace (spolu s dalšími proměnnými) pak byl sledován v aplikované části této bakalářské práce, věnované konkrétně sledování značení těžby nerostných surovin a odvětví zpracovatelského průmyslu ve školních atlasech. Prostřednictvím dotazníkového šetření založeného na rešerši aktuálního kontextu děl školních atlasů ve střední Evropě je hodnocena mj. úspěšnost v intepretovatelnosti stabilních a nestabilních mapových znaků školních atlasů. Toto šetření bylo provedeno na celkem 101 studujících gymnázií v závěrečném ročníku standardní výuky zeměpisu. Závěrem bylo zjištěno, že byť je stabilita grafického znaku rozhodně napomáhajícím faktorem, není zásadní skutečností rozhodující o úspěšném předání informace grafickým znakem.

Abstract:

One of the many characteristics that can be considered when examining cartographic symbols (as well as all symbols in general) is their semantic stability. The influence of a semantic stability of particular map signs on the success of interpretation (along with other variables) was examined in the applied research section of this bachelor thesis, specifically focusing on the representation of mineral extraction and sectors of manufacturing industry in school atlases. Through a questionnaire survey based on the research of the current context of school atlas works in Central Europe, the success in interpreting stable and unstable map signs used in school atlases is evaluated, among other factors. This survey was conducted among a total of 101 students in their final year of standard geography education at gymnasiums. In conclusion, it was found that although the stability of a graphic sign is certainly a contributing element, it is not the decisive factor in the process of successful conveyance of information through.
