Current changes of active layer thermal regime and thickness on James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Anotácia:

Cílem disertační práce je analýza variability termálního režimu a mocnosti aktivní vrstvy na 4 lokalitách na ostrově Jamese Rosse ve východní části Antarktického poloostrova v období 2011 až 2016 a jejich porovnání v rámci Antarktického poloostrova. K dosažení cílů disertační práce byla studována čtyři hlavní témata: a) Analýza variability teploty vzduchu a termálního režimu půdy v období 2011 až 2016 poblíž stanice Johana Gregora Mendela b) Hodnocení vlivu sněhové pokrývky na termální režim aktivní vrstvy c) Stanovení vlivu litologie na termální režim půdy a mocnost aktivní vrstvy d) Srovnání termálního režimu na ostrově Jamese Rosse s dalšími lokalitami v oblasti Antarktického poloostrova. Jednotlivá témata byla studována ve třech publikovaných článcích a jednom rukopisu. Pro získání porovnatelných dat byly použity jednotné měřící systémy a data byla dále zpracována podle analytických postupů běžně používaných pro studium aktivní vrstvy v oblasti Antarktidy. Na základě nejdelší časové řady získané z meteorologické stanice v blízkosti stanice Johana Gregora Mendela (AWS-JGM) byla stanovena průměrná teplota vzduchu na –7,5 °C v období 1/2011 až 3/2016, což je o 0,5 °C méně než je teplotní průměr pro období 2006–2015. Průměrná teplota půdy v hloubce 5 cm dosáhla ve studovaném období –6,0 °C, v 50 cm–5,7 °C. Mocnost aktivní vrstvy na stanici AWS-JGM se pohybovala mezi 52 a 65 cm. Variabilita termálního režimu aktivní vrstvy a její mocnosti mezi jednotlivými studovanými lokalitami byla ovlivněna především litologickými podmínkami. Výsledky ukázaly pouze nízké rozdíly teploty vzduchu mezi studovanými lokalitami a podrobná analýza následně vyloučila vliv sněhové pokrývky na termální režim aktivní vrstvy. Rozdíly v litologii jsou spojené s rozdílnou texturou, vlhkostí a mineralogickým složení půdy, což vedlo k výrazným rozdílům v mocnosti aktivní vrstvy mezi lokalitami Berry Hill Slopes (85 až 90 cm) a Abernethy Flats (52 až 64 cm), dále pak mezi lokalitami AWS-JGM (52 až 65 cm) a AWS-CALM (86 až 87 cm). Nejvýraznější litologicky podmíněné rozdíly mocnosti aktivní vrstvy byly pozorovány na monitorovací ploše CALM-S, kde byla pomocí sondování zjištěna mocnost aktivní vrstvy mezi cca. 50–60 cm až 100–113 cm. Na závěr byly výsledky porovnány s dostupnými údaji ze západní části Antarktického poloostrova, které ukázaly chladnější podmínky s mělčí aktivní vrstvou na ostrově Jamese Rosse.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyse the variability of active layer thermal regime and active layer thickness at 4 study sites on James Ross Island, eastern Antarctic Peninsula in period 2011 to 2016 and compare them with the sites within the Antarctic Peninsula region. To reach this goal, four topics were defined: a) Analysis of the variability of air and ground thermal regime in period 2011–2016 near the Johann Gregor Mendel Station. b) Evaluation of the effect of snow cover on active layer thermal regime. c) Quantification of the effect of lithology on ground thermal regime and active layer thickness. d) Analysis of the active layer thermal regime on James Ross Island in context of active layer conditions in Antarctic Peninsula region. The individual topics have been studied in three published paper and one submitted manuscript. To obtain comparable data from all study sites, the uniform setting of all systems for data measurement were used. Both air and ground thermal regime were analysed with standard methods broadly used in last years in Antarctica. The longest dataset from period 1/2011 to 3/2016 was obtained from the monitoring site near the Johann Gregor Mendel Station (AWS-JGM). The mean annual air temperature over study period was –7.5 °C at AWS-JGM site, which was 0.5 °C lower than the decadal average in period 2006–2015. The mean annual ground temperature at 5 cm reached –6.0 °C, at 50 cm it was –5.7 °C during the study period. Active layer thickness at AWS-JGM varied between 52 and 65 cm. The inter-site variability of active layer thermal regime and thickness were mainly affected by local lithological conditions. The data showed very low differences of air temperatures between individual sites and the thorough study neglect the effect of snow cover as important factor affecting active layer thermal regime on James Ross Island. Lithological differences are related to different soil/rock texture, water content and mineralogical composition. They resulted in significant differences of active layer thickness between Berry Hill Slopes (85 to 90 cm) and Abernethy Flats (52 to 64 cm), as well as between AWS-JGM (52 and 65 cm) and AWS-CALM (86 to 87 cm). The most pronounced differences caused by lithology showed active layer depth measurements on CALM-S area, where active layer depth varies from ca. 50–60 cm to 100–113 cm. Finally, the comparison with similar data from western Antarctic Peninsula shows colder and thinner active layer on James Ross Island.
