Educational Intervention at Epilepsy Issues

Abstract:

I přesto, že je epilepsie často se vyskytujícím chronickým onemocněním, znalosti o něm jsou nízké a řada epileptiků trpí stigmatizací způsobenou jejich onemocněním. Cílem studie bylo srovnat a analyzovat efektivitu různých intervencí směřujících k redukci stigmatu a k pozitivnímu posunu v oblasti znalostí o epilepsii u dětí 4. a 5. tříd. K měření znalostí o epilepsii byl vytvořen jedenácti položkový dotazník s uzavřenými otázkami. Míra stigmatizace byla zjišťována pomocí SSE dotazníku (STIGMA SCALE OF EPILEPSY). Jako intervence ke zvýšení znalostí o epilepsii a snížení stigmatizace byl použit edukační animovaný film nebo čtený příběh s totožným obsahem. Dotazníky byly vyplňovány ve třech časových intervalech - před intervencí, v zápětí po intervenci a po 6 měsících od intervence Do studie bylo zařazeno 182 respondentů (47% muži, průměrný věk 10 let), kteří byli rozděleni randomizovaně do dvou skupin podle typu intervence. 37% respondentů mělo s epilepsií osobní zkušenosti nebo znali někoho s epilepsií. Znalosti o epilepsii byly bezprostředně po obou typech intervencí vyšší, s odstupem šesti měsíců mírně klesly, ale stále byly statisticky signifikantně vyšší než před realizovanou intervencí (p <0,001). Míra stigmatizace byla bezprostředně po obou intervencích nižší, s odstupem šesti měsíců se ještě snížila. Mezi efektivitou filmu a čteného příběhu nebyl nalezen statisticky signifikantní rozdíl. Jak edukační film, tak i čtený příběh jsou efektivními typy intervencí z hlediska zvýšení míry znalostí a snížení stigmatizace u žáků základních škol ve věku 9-11 let. V účinnosti obou intervenčních metod není rozdíl. Obě metody jsou snadno aplikovatelné, a proto mohou být snadno zavedeny pro praxe pedagogů na 1. stupni ZŠ.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on educational intervention in the issue of epilepsy. The aim of the study was to compare and analyze the effectiveness of various interventions leading to reduction of stigma and to progress in the knowledge of epilepsy in children (9-11 years). To measure knowledge of epilepsy there was created a questionnaire with 11 closed questions. The degree of stigmatization was detected by Stigma scale of epilepsy (SSE). An educational animated movie or reading a story (with identical content) was used as intervention to increase knowledge of epilepsy and to reduce the stigmatization. The questionnaires were completed in three intervals - before intervention, immediately after the intervention and 6 month after the intervention. A total of 200 respondents were interviewed, in the final analysis were included 182 respondents. 37% of the respondents had a personal experiences with epilepsy or knew somebody with epilepsy. The knowledge of epilepsy was higher immediately after the interventions. The knowledge decreased slightly after 6 months, but they were still statistically significantly higher than before interventions (p <0.001). The degree of stigmatization was lower immediately after the interventions and it has declined 6 months later. There was no statistically significant difference between the effectiveness of the movie and reading the story. As an educational movie, as well as reading the story are effective types of interventions in terms of increasing the level of knowledge and reducing the stigma in elementary schools pupils aged 9-11 years. It is no differences between effectiveness of interventions. The results suggest that both interventions could be easily applied, and therefore they can be easily implemented to the practice of primary school teachers.
